  1. BELLWORK What do you know about science fiction? Have you ever read science fiction?

  2. PLANNER: HOMEWORK Please read the story I pass out and answer the questions that are attached in full sentences.

  3. Ray Bradbury 11-1-18

  4. But Before Bradbury...

  5. Science Fiction • Science Fiction is usually set somewhere that is not earth • If it is set on earth, it is usually set far in the future • In science fiction, there is usually some sort of problem to figure out or phenomenon to experience • When that thing is experienced or the problem is solved, the story wraps up nicely • What other genres are closely related to science fiction?

  6. Science Fiction and Themes • There are themes that are usually common to science fiction • Usually, some of these themes might be at hand: • Man vs. Environment • Man vs. Man • Destruction • War • Technology • Is there anything else you can think of? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrusqQ5JftA

  7. From the Video... • What did you take away from the video? • Science fiction is all about exploring possibilities • Really, it could be summed up the way the video summed it up-- as a big “What if” • In tonight’s story, we will explore this idea with the distant future • Keep the “what if” in the back of your mind while reading! • So, let’s move on...

  8. Ray Bradbury • Bradbury is considered one of the most influential science fiction writers of our time • He has written books such as “Fahrenheit 451,” “The Martian Chronicles,” and “The Illustrated Man” • Along with his novel writing, he has written many short stories that are important in the larger picture of telling the story of science fiction • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzD0YtbViCs

  9. About the Video... • There is a very important quote at the beginning of the video just watched: “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. You just have to get people to stop reading them.” (Bradbury) • What does this quote mean? • How did Bradbury describe his writing process? • What do you think about his writing process?

  10. Tonight’s Story • While being a quintessential science fiction story, this story also explores the meaning of humanity • Think about the characters as you read, and think about the actions the characters make and how it affects the story • Really think about the ending and what the ending means • Beside setting, how is this story science fiction?
