Where They live • Bottlenose Dolphins live in temperate and tropical waters worldwide.  • The surface water temperature varies from about 50⁰-90⁰F. • Bottlenose Dolphin can be found in the Mediterranean and Black seas. • Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins are found in the Indian Ocean and in the Tropical and Sub-Tropical waters of the western Pacific.

Their Habitat • Bottlenose dolphins live in a variety of habitats, from coastal waters to the open ocean. • There are two different kinds of Bottlenose Dolphins; coastal and offshore. • The coastal breed usually live in warm, shallow waters. •  The offshore breed seems to be adapted for cooler, deeper waters.

MIGRATION • Changes in water temperature and movements of food fish may be the cause of the seasonal migrations of the Bottlenose Dolphins. • Some coastal dolphins in higher latitudes tend to migrate farther south in the winter. • For example, coastal bottlenose dolphins on the Atlantic side of the U.S. migrate seasonally between New Jersey and North Carolina. • Coastal dolphins in warmer waters show less seasonal movements.

  5. POPULATION • The Bottlenose dolphins are not an endangered species. • The worldwide population of bottlenose dolphins is unknown. Specific bottlenose dolphin populations in some areas have been estimated. • The Mediterranean population is estimated at less than 10,000.

  7. FUN FACTS • Dolphins have to be conscious to breath. This means that they cannot go into a full deep sleep, because then they would suffocate. Dolphins have “solved” that by letting one half of their brain sleep at a time. • Dolphins communicate mainly by means of sounds. • Bottlenose dolphins eat several kinds of fish (including mullet, mackerel, herring, cod) and squid. Their diet depends on what is available in the area they live in and also on the season. • The maximum age for bottlenose dolphins is between 40 and 50 years.
