  1. Understanding the Different Viewpoint Configurations

  2. Currently, there are three main types of configurations that can be used for Viewpoint. • iSeries using Terminal Emulation (Traditional) • iSeries using CLASS. • Windows Edition (VPWE)

  3. iSeries using TE RF Devices iSeries/400 Access Point • Any major hardware brand can be used. • The vender’s version of TE is used to communicate to the iSeries, no Nutech programs are installed on the devices. • All Viewpoint software Resides on the iSeries. • No iSeries or Network downtime solutions here.

  4. iSeries using CLASS RF Devices iSeries/400 Access Point • The devices use Nutech CLASS programs for communication to the iSeries. TE from the vendors is not required. At this point, CLASS only works with Intermec. • Devices can still capture information if they lose communication to the iSeries or Network. • Screens can be created on the iSeries without coding, and are then transmitted to the devices.

  5. Windows Edition Windows Server Running VPWE RF Devices Server with ERP Access Point LAN WAN • Requires Licenses for Windows and the data base used. • License for Integration Server may be needed if replication is required. • The server running the ERP can be on a different platform. • No special software is required on the devices. At this point, it only works with Intermec. The programs on the devices will be the same as used in the iSeries version of CLASS. • Allows VPWE to perform replication. • Cannot use the Screen Mapper.

  6. What hardware do you need for VPWE? This is not concrete. Like the iSeries, it depends on how much traffic will go through the server. Name Brand Intel Server Pentium III(IV) 1.4 Ghz processor 512 Meg of Ram 20 Gig disk(SCSI or IDE) 5 user Windows License 5 user license Database License Possible Integration Server License

  7. iSeries TE iSeries CLASS VPWE Development Relatively easy for Nutech. to develop. Full functionality is available. Easier to develop views, but does have limitations on functionality. Usually more difficult and projects tend to take longer. Standards are currently changing. Support Very little support is usually required by Nutech or the Client. There may by a little more support required at the device level. Because this is new to us, more support will most likely be required. Remote support not as efficient. Downtime If the network or iSeries go down, scanning goes down. Devices can continue to collect data without validation if the network or iSeries go down. For most applications, this is more of a selling point than practical use. Replication can be used so scanning can continue if the VP server loses connection to the ERP server. Licensing Additional licenses needed for TE on the devices. No additional licenses are required. Licenses are required for Windows, the data base and possibly Integration Server. RF Hardware Any major brand can be used. Little to no support is required by Nutech for the devices. At this point, only Intermec is supported. Devices must be set-up initially, and downloads must be performed anytime a screen is changed. At this point, only Intermec is supported. Device set-up and maintainance will the the same as with CLASS. Interfaces to ERPs Nutech Screen Mapper can be used. Nutech Screen Mapper can be used. Nutech Screen Mapper CANNOT be used if the ERP is non-iSeries. We must rely on ERP-supplied APIs or programming our own. Reliability Very reliable. Very reliable. Yet to be determined.
