  1. Leadership Presentation Dr. Barbara Hioco, Reedley College President Dr. Cynthia Azari, Fresno City College President Fresno City College State Center Community College District

  2. Characteristics of a Leader Group What qualities would you use to describe an Exceptional Leader?

  3. Characteristics of a Leader Survey (2003) – 100,000 people, including faculty from higher education were asked to describe the values, traits and characteristics they found most important in a leader. Characteristics receiving 50%+ votes were: • Honest • Forward-thinking • Competent • Inspiring

  4. Characteristics of a Leader Dissertation study on the effectiveness of Dean of Instruction (mid-level position) at a private, secular, two-year community college: • Conflict Resolution • Developing faculty through coaching, mentoring and training • Facilitating decision making among faculty members • Collaborative vision setting with faculty members • Communicating (written, oral, listening) • Facilitating change collaboratively • Giving and receiving feedback

  5. What is Leadership?Group Define Leadership in one sentence: Leadership is ……..

  6. What is Leadership? “Leadership is influence-nothing more, nothing less.” (John Maxwell; Leadership 101) “Interpersonal influence-directed toward achieving organizational objectives.” (Tosi)

  7. Leadership is Not: Management – maintaining systems & processes-no interpersonal component. LEADERS DO RIGHT THINGS, MANAGERS DO THINGS RIGHT. “EFFICIENCY IS DOING THINGS RIGHT; EFFECTIVENESS IS DOING THE RIGHT THINGS.” (Peter Drucker)

  8. Leadership is Not: PIONEER – first out isn’t always leading. THE ART OF BEING WISE IS KNOWING WHAT TO OVERLOOK.

  9. Leadership is Not: KNOWLEDGE POWER – pure knowledge without personal traits does not equal leadership. “GENIUS IS ONE PERCENT INSPIRATION AND NINETY-NINE PERCENT PERSPIRATION.” (Thomas Edison)

  10. Leadership is Not: POSITION POWER – title and rank in organization. IT’S NOT THE POSITION THAT MAKES THE LEADER, IT’S THE LEADER THAT MAKES THE POSITION.

  11. Toolset of Leadership Skills MANAGEMENT SKILLS – time, meeting, budget, planning. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS OFTEN NOT WHAT IS DONE BUT HOW IT IS DONE.

  12. Toolset of Leadership SkillsGroup What is the most difficult aspect of effective Leadership?

  13. Toolset of Leadership Skills CONFLICT RESOLUTION – mainstay with interdependence between individuals and groups. “Conflict is an opportunity to grow and make positive changes.” THE SUCCESSFUL MANAGER IS ONE WHO DOES WHAT HAS TO BE DONE AT THE TIME THEY HATE TO DO IT MOST.

  14. Toolset of Leadership Skills COACHING, MENTORING, TRAINING – career advice, increasing skill levels, increasing commitment to the team and organization. Motivating others. “IF YOU AREN’T FIRED WITH ENTHUSIASM, YOU’LL BE FIRED WITH ENTHUSIASM.” (Vince Lombardi)

  15. Toolset of Leadership Skills FACILITATING DECISION MAKING – identifying solutions to problems. “Problem Identifier vs. Problem Solver” NOT TO DECIDE IS TO DECIDE.

  16. Toolset of Leadership Skills VISION – collaboration on setting the future direction of the organization. A LEADER IS SOMEONE WITH A VISION WHO CAN INSPIRE OTHERS TO FOLLOW.

  17. Toolset of Leadership Skills COMMUNICATION – oral, written, physical. TOO OFTEN WE ARE BROADCASTING WHEN WE SHOULD BE TUNING IN. “O, LORD, PLEASE MAKE MY WORDS SWEET AND TENDER TODAY, FOR TOMORROW I MAY HAVE TO EAT THEM.”

  18. Conclusion Leadership is a combination of skills, attitudes, and actions.

  19. Conclusion • SKILLS – interpersonal (communication, collaboration, organization) that build trust and relationships. • ATTITUDE – positive, agent for change, believe in power of people. • ACTIONS – reflect the mission, core values, and vision of the organization.
