I have heard some say that they are on the computer during the day and they dont want to touch a computer when they get home. I say you are missing out on a huge opportunity to deepen your teaching .. and work deep instead of broad.. You are here, now what? In todays session you will learn about technology and how it can impact your life and your classroom. Our focus will be on social networking and how it can impact us professionally as well as personally. Our lives are full of various things that bombard us on a daily basis. We are busy preparing lessons and making sure the technology the kids need to use at school is working properly and making sure they are behaving appropriately on the computers and we are doing fund raisers for FBLA or whatever leadership organization our kids are involved with. We may be class advisors or yearbook advisors and the list goes on and on. The question comes up.. when do you have time to enrich yourself. What have you done for YOU.     5. All of us here today need to be connected with each other all year long and not just one weekend in October. And on top of that we can connect with teachers all over the US and even the world who teach what we teach and have the same successes and frustrations that we have. We are not alone.     6. Collaboration Some of the most important forms of professional learning and problem solving occur in group settings. PLC Professional Learning Communities are being emphasized in our schools this year and what we will learn today will broaden our Community.     7. PLC face to face or online? While collaborative, face-to-face professional learning and work are the hallmarks of a school culture that assumes collective responsibility for student learning, technology will increasingly provide a means for new and different forms of collaboration. Technology will enable teachers and administrators from around the country and world to share ideas, strategies, and tools with one another in ways that will dramatically increase the number of collaborative links among educators. But electronic forms of such work will also present teachers and administrators with new challenges whose outlines are only becoming dimly visible as larger numbers of educators begin to use these processes to strengthen their teaching and leadership practices. Educators engaging in collaborative efforts may at first fail to realize the full potential of collaborative groups to exercise greater freedom, independence,or discretion in their decision making and choices of action. To attain this we must establish new work paradigms brainstorm new ways for achieving their instructional and educational objectives Social Networking provides a vital, alive and very real way to attain the collaboration requirements that our districts are placing upon us.

    9. Professional Development Improving professional learning for educators is a crucial step in transforming schools and improving academic achievement Professional learning must be planned and organized to engage all teachers regularly and to benefit all students

    10. Professional Development must be high quality, sustained throughout the year at every grade level and content area and connected to practice. Teachers need at least 50 hours in a given area to improve their skills and student learning in a particular area. Majority of teachers receive about 16 hours in a 12-month period. Intensive Professional Development Initiatives that offered an average of 49 hours in a year showed a positive and significant effect on student achievement (approximately 21 percentile points)

    11. Collaboration Professional development should build strong working relationships among teachers Research shows that this type of collaboration builds productive working relationships and that there is a more willingness to share practices and try new ways of solving problems in practice

    12. The Learning Leader Leverage for improved performance happens through networks, not individuals. It helps build systematic improvement.     15. Todays social networking has turned the corner. Key Word: COMMUNICATION Todays kids have shown measured improvement in their writing skills because they are communicating Yes we have to correct their abbreviations or cyber language if you will.. but they ARE communicating much more than ever in history. There are many ways to communication.. through pictures through words through blogs and podcasts.. We do have obstacles to overcome sometimes.. often if we try to use networking at school we are blocked due to school security systems.. so it may require working on our networking skills at home.     16. Communication is a basic goal of all education. This is communicating creativity, ideas and solutions. Our kids are going to use the technology regardless of us. We need to be steps ahead of them instead of trailing along behind. With students we have to watch for the use of the technologies inappropriately. They havent mastered the skills of making good choices altogether. Hopefully that isnt an issue with us as adults. Privacy concerns are an issue. However on the positive side. The major social networking entities have tightened up security issues and rarely is privacy an issue. We choose how much information to allow others to view .. it is totally our choice who sees it and how much we tell.With students we have to watch for the use of the technologies inappropriately.     30. Make Categories I have friends and colleagues as well as long lost relatives and never lost relatives. To keep them all straight, I set up categories called lists.     31. I dont want to spend too much time talking about Facebook. Because I want to get to a couple of other things and I am afraid I will run out of time. Also there is an NBEA site.. on that one instead of joining you do what is called, becoming a fan .. it is basically the same function as a group but allows for a bit more interactivity between its members because is more like the organization is a person with a facebook profile and you become their friend, than a separate group that you join and belong to.     35. Social Networking Classroom Activities That Employ Critical Thinking by David Wetzel. Using twitter in the classroom is becoming mainstream in many schools around the country and world. The challenge with any use of online education technology tool is the appropriate engagement of students in a meaningful manner. To this end, the successful use of twitter is about making connections with other teachers and students around the world to support significant learning events.

    36. The use of twitter for improving student learning also requires movement beyond just collaborating with other teachers, pedagogical self-reflection, and professional development activities. It is essential to involve students in social network activities focused on research, data gathering, communicating with experts, examining other points of view, and dialogue within all curriculum areas using online resources.     37. Online Education Technology Uses of Tweets The tips provided [in the next few slides] are based on expert teacher experiences using the social network twitter. These activities are designed to encourage students in making connections beyond a basic understanding of concepts using this online education technology.

    38. 1. Gathering Data use a class twitter network to support student collection of scientific data, historical facts, geographical information, and poll data. Examples include collecting rainfall pH data around the world and geographic locations of specific locations around the world.

    39. 2. Creative Story Theme select any genre and begin a story opener which is tweeted around the class network of participating schools for contribution to the story line. Once all twitter network participants have contributed, have students develop a coherent story. This involves editing, story structure, creative writing, and proper use of grammar.

    40. 3. Polls students develop polls regarding controversial issues using current events, historical events, or scientific events using Twitter Poll. Once the poll data is collected students can make data tables, draw graphs, investigate mathematic probability, analyze data, and use logical reasoning skills to explain poll findings.

    41. 4. Word Literacy have students select a word of the week and tweet it around the network requesting synonyms, homonyms, and antonyms of the word. Once all responses are received, students check for accuracy and develop a Wordle of the word for strengthening literacy skills.

    42. 5. Communicating with Experts when burning questions develop during classroom discussions, have students develop140 character question to ask a class twitter network expert. This causes students to create clear and concise questions, along with teaching research skills.

    43. 6. Online Scavenger Hunts students are tasked with finding appropriate online resources which support a specific concept or topic being studied and post them on the network. Part of the challenge is that once a resource has been posted it cannot be used again.

    44. 7. Facts 140 Characters at a time Students in the class share facts about math, science, English, or history topics on the network for others to learn. For example groups of students are tasked with sharing 10 key facts about geometric shapes. Once a fact is used it cannot be used by other groups.

    45. 8. Online Research share, inquire, and engage students in using the network to conduct research. Examples include investigating the cause of the disappearance of honey bees around the country, global warming, and disappearing water resources.

    46. 9. Informal Assessment as students work on projects or other assignments periodic updates are required using twitter to provide tips, resources, interesting information, and difficulties. These updates allow for periodic progress checks, along with an assessment of student project activity.

    47. 10. Online Debates arrange for a real-time debate with another classroom on the class twitter network. Examples include zoos do more harm than good, impact of fast food restaurants on health issue, and the U.S. should ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

    48. 11. Geo Hunt Arrange with twitter network participants to provide clues to find their location using Google Earth. Students piece together clues using different layers of Google earth to locate the exact location of the person providing clues. Students make concrete connections regarding time zones and geographic locations around the world in social studies.

    49. 12. Current Events use twitter to receive updates of current events in science, math, history, and literature. This removes the classroom walls and allows timely discussions of what is happening in the world outside the classroom. Selected current events are then used for debates and research connected to concepts being studied.

    50. Making Connections between Learning and Concepts As an online education technology tool, twitters impact on engaging students in learning concepts is unlimited. This social networking tool goes beyond the being social to being a valuable tool for teaching and learning. This tool, along with other classroom online tools, allows classrooms to move from centers of isolation to centers of learning without walls.

There is no doubt . . . . . .that Technology is changing the Way Educators Work Examples: It's 7:15 A.M. as Mrs. Jones opens her classroom door, turns on the computer and logs on to the school network. During the few minutes before the bell rings signaling students that their day has begun, Mrs. Jones checks her email for any new messages that may need attention. Teachers: There will be a faculty meeting at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 5 in the faculty lounge to discuss the upcoming honor society assembly. Teachers and schools are becoming more efficient and effective communicators through the use of technology. The lines of communication are clearer than ever as a result of email and computers in schools. After reading her email, Mrs. Jones marks her calendar for the faculty meeting and team conference with Erin's parents. She makes a note to gather John's assignments and send a card of condolence to the family.
