  3. Early life • Neville Thomas Bonner was born on the 28th of March 1922 in Ukerebagh in the mouth of Tweed river • He was raised by his Aboriginal mother and grandparents as his father moved back to England before Neville was born. He never did meet his father • Neville’s early life was tough as there was no opportunity for education. He only attended one year of schooling at the age of 14. • When his mother died he and his brother Jimmy were sent off to live with his Grandmother in Ipswich, who spoke fluent English and insisted on teaching Neville to speak the English tongue. • In 1960 Bonner upheld the occupation where he became associated with the One People Australia League (OPAL), a moderate Aboriginal rights organisation. He served as one of the league’s directors for several years and was the Queensland president in 1970. Following the 1967 referendum, which amended the constitution to give the government the power to make laws in relation to Indigenous Australians.

  4. Federal Parliament • Neville Bonner was the first Aboriginal person to sit in Federal Parliament as a Senator for Queensland from 1971 to 1983. • On his journey from poverty to parliament house he experienced unemployment and discrimination. As a politician he worked to improve conditions for Aborigines, and became a voice for his people • In 1984 Neville Bonner was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia. It is an amazing achievement to be awarded with.

  5. Furthering of Aboriginal Rights -1968 Neville Bonner president of OPAL. ( One People Australia League). Aborigine conditions, educational rights and housing improved in his name. -1971 First Aboriginal in Federal Parliament, sat in this position for over 12 years. Was known to be the voice of his fellow Indigenous people -1974 Invited to address the FCAATSI annual conference on the topic of Aboriginals and political rights There are many more significant events…

  6. Outro • In conclusion we believe that although Neville Thomas Bonner unfortunately passed away in 1999 that his memory and inspiration still stays in our hearts no matter whether we are Indigenous or not. No matter our skin tone or pigmentation. But only the content of our heart. • Neville Bonner will never be forgotten. His contribution to furthering Aboriginal Rights were so important that without him, Indigenous Australians would be where they are today.
