  1. Tennessee Academic Vocablary

  2. Absolute Value • Equals the distance from that number to zero on a number line.

  3. Additive Inverses • The opposite of a number. • The sum of a number and its additive inverse is 0.

  4. Box & Whisker Plot Shows the distribution of a set of data along a number line, dividing the data into four parts using the median and quartiles.

  5. Coefficient • The number which is multiplied by one or more variables or powers of variables in an algebraic expression.

  6. Cube Root • A number n whose cube equals nᵌ

  7. Function • A relationship in which each member of the domain has a unique range

  8. Function Notation • These mathematical statements all mean the same! • y= 2x + 3 • f(x) = 2x + 3 • g(x) = 2x + 3 • h(a) = 2a + 3 • The typical notation for a function is f(x). This is read as “f of x”. This does NOT mean f times x. This is a special notation used only for functions! However, f(x) is not the only variable used in function notation! You may see g(x), or h(x), or even b(a).

  9. Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) • The greatest common divisor is the largest number that divides two or more integers

  10. Greatest Common Factor • The largest of the common factors of two or more numbers.

  11. Histograms • A bar graph that show the frequency of data for intervals.

  12. Intercepts • An x-intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero • A y-intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero.

  13. Interquartile range • The difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile in a set of data.

  14. Least Common Multiple • The least whole number greater than 0 that is a multiple of each of two or more numbers.

  15. Linear Equation • An equation that can be represented as a straight line on a graph.

  16. Negative exponents • A negative exponent means how many times to divide by the number. 8-2

  17. Perfect Square • The product of a whole number multiplied by itself. • 4 squared = 4 x 4 = 16

  18. Property • Rules that enable you to solve problems in algebra. • Commutative property • Associative property • Distributive property

  19. Proportional Relationships • A relationship between inputs to outputs in which the ratio of inputs and outputs is always the same.

  20. Quartile • The values that divide a list of numbers into quarters.

  21. Scatter Plots • A graph that shows the relationship between two quantities.

  22. Scientific Notation • A number written as the product in which the first factor is greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10 and the second factor is a power of 10.

  23. Slope • A number that shows how much a line tilts; for a nonvertical line the slope equals the change in y divided by the change in x.

  24. Square Root • A number n whose square equals n2.

  25. Unit Rate • A rate in which the second measurement or amount is 1 unit.
