From December 1862 through August 1864. Both sides have completed mobilization. Both have a different set of problems, advantages, etc. Contest becomes a contest of wills-which is stronger? Can the U.S. win by conquering the CSA? Can the CSA win by surviving?

  1. From December 1862 through August 1864. Both sides have completed mobilization. Both have a different set of problems, advantages, etc. Contest becomes a contest of wills-which is stronger? Can the U.S. win by conquering the CSA? Can the CSA win by surviving? This will be the bloodiest phase of this war. Both side have mobilized their full resources. By the end of 1863, they are still dealing with the problem of total war. Very bloody, technology makes war more devastating, do they want to continue? 2nd Phase of the War

  2. Joseph Hooker replaced Ambrose Burnsides. Took over the largest army in U.S. history. Lee left some troops in Fredericksburg then advanced to meet Hooker at Chancellorsville. May 1st-5th: Lee devastated Hooker’s army. Confederate losses are 13,000 to Union 17,000. Chancellorsville

  3. Lee’s largest loss was Stone Wall Jackson. Lee decided that after this pounding of the Union Army, he would invade Pennsylvania and threaten Washington.

  4. Lee entered campaign with some liabilities. Loss of Jackson-he took “discretionary suggestions” as orders. Overconfident-Lee had divided forces and won in past battles. Begins to feel invincible. Hooker replaced by George G. Meade. Moved after Lee. Gettysburg Campaign

  5. 1st time the Union cavalry matched up with the CSA cavalry. Jeb Stuart (CS) claimed victory, as reports came in, his image was tarnished. Goes off to redeem himself, left Lee blind during the Gettysburg campaign. Battle of Brandy Station-June 9, 1863

  6. Lee assaulted the Union position on the right, left and finally in the center on July 3rd (Pickett’s Charge). Lee unable to break the Union lines and was bloodily repulsed. CSA casualties-28,000. Union casualties-23,000. Lee forced to retreat back across the Potomac. Gettysburg: July 1st-3rd, 1863
