    1. Quotation Marks and Parenthetical Citations Notes #

    2. You know to use quotation marks around titles of short works like songs and short stories. Also, you MUST use quotation marks ( ) when you copy from a text.

    3. When to use them DO NOT use quotation marks if you paraphrase or dont copy exactly. This is called an indirect quotation. Example: Romeo said that he loved Juliet. DO use quotation marks if you copy exactly what someone said or wrote. This is a direct quote. Example: Romeo said, It is the east and Juliet is the sun!

    4. Capitalization in Quotes Capitalize the first word in a quote if: It is at the beginning of a sentence. Peace? questions Tybalt. The first word of the quote is the first word of a complete sentence in the quote. Juliet explains, A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

    5. Punctuation in Quotes. When ending a quotation in the middle of a sentence, put a comma inside the quotation. These violent delights have violent ends, foreshadows the Friar. When ending the quotation at the end of a sentence: Put a period inside the quotation. Put a question mark or exclamation point inside or outside depending whether its part of the quote. What? asked Tybalt. Did Tybalt say, I will get revenge?

    6. Parenthetical Citations If you quote a text, you must use parenthetical citations at the end of the sentence containing the quote. In parentheses, For normal text write the authors last name and page number. (Brown, 96). For Shakespeares play, write the act in capital Roman Numerals (I, II, III, IV, and V) and scene in lowercase (i, ii, iii, iv, and v) and line numbers in Arabic numerals (1,2,3, etc.). Example: Juliet responds to the marriage, It is an honour I dream not of (I, iii, 67).
