Introduction • Two significant words in our text: “life” and “light” (John 1:4) • “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” • The created world is evidence of life before the creation – It was a quality of God, like omniscience, omnipotence, etc. • “Life begets life” – No exception has ever been discovered • Evolutionists start with assumption that none life begat life • The Bible starts with “In the beginning God…” (Gen. 1:1) who called life and light into existence

Introduction • The world was created “by the Word of the Lord” (John 1:1-3) • “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the word of His mouth … For He spoke and it was done; He commanded and it stood fast” (Psa. 33:6, 9) • The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:4) – He (Christ) was “God manifest in the flesh” (1 Tim. 3:16) • The Creator (the Son of God) came “in the likeness of sinful flesh” (Phil. 2:7-8)

Christ Is the Source of Life • “In Him was life, and the life was the light of man” (1:14) • “As the Father has life within Himself, so He has granted to Him (the Son) to have life within Himself” (5:26) • The same attribute is claimed by the Son – “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live" (John 11:25). • “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the father, except through me" (John 14:6)

Christ Is the Source of Life • The source of all natural life – “All things were made by Him, and without Him nothing was made” (1:3) • For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things and in him all things consist” (Col. 1:16-17) • All living things – plants and animals – receive life from God

Christ Is the Source of Life • “Christ is the source of all spiritual life • He has “life within himself” (John 5:26) • He claimed to be “the way, the truth, the life” (John 14:6) • He gives life to the world: “For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world" (John 6:63) • He is “the Prince of life” – Jews killed Him (Acts 3:15); God raised Him to be Prince and Savior” (Acts 5:23)

Christ Is the Source of Life • “He gives eternal life” • And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). • “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He who has the son has life; he who does not have the son of God does not have life. And we know that the son of God has come and has given us an understand-ing, that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life (1 John 5:11-12).

  8. Christ Is the Source of Life • “He gives eternal life” • In his prayer for his disciples, Jesus said: ‘Father, the thehour has come. Glorify your son, that your son also may glorify you, as you have given him authority over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:1-3) • Note: “Eternal life” denotes quality, not duration

  9. Christ Is the Sustainer of Life • As the source of life, He is “the water of life” • After leaving Egypt the Israelites drank water out of a rock. Paul says “they all drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ" (1 Cor. 10:4) • Far by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, where the slaves are free – and have all been made to drink into one Spirit” (1 Cor. 12:13)

  10. Christ Is the Sustainer of Life • The food and water He supplies completely satisfies • "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35) • He told the woman at the well, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:10:14)

  11. Christ Is the Sustainer of Life • He is the light of life • "I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12) • “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:5) • “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:48)

  12. Christ Is the Sustainer of Life • He dispels the darkness of sin. • “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:4:5) • John the Baptist was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light” (vs. 6-8) • Jesus shows the way out of darkness. He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 9:1-2. “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned” (Matt. 4:16)

  13. Christ Is the Goal of Life • He is both the Beginning and the End – “the Alpha and the Omega” (Rev. 1:8). The First and the Last (Rev. 1:17; 2:8) • He is the “Author and the Finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2) • We must keep our eyes on Jesus as the goal of life (Heb. 12:2). Let us be like Paul and “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14) • He is able to present us “faultless before the presence of God in His glory, with exceeding joy (Jude 1:24-25)

  14. Conclusion • Life (temporal & eternal) is based in the eternal life of God • Salvation begins with God, who purposed “in Christ before time began” to extend grace and mercy to sinful men • His purpose was revealed “by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who is abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (Eph. 1:9). • Life – Spiritual Life – is “in the Son” – where “old things have passed away” and “all things are new” (2 Cor. 5:17)
