Interoperable Data Formats

This proposal aims to establish a common database schema for ice mapping systems, enabling seamless exchange of ice chart information among participating Ice Services. The goal is to provide mariners with consistent and easily accessible ice information across different local authorities. The workshop will discuss the benefits and objectives of interoperable data formats and develop action plans.

  1. Interoperable Data Formats International Ice Charting Working Group – VI Ottawa, October 2005

  2. Towards a Global Sea Ice Mapping System International Ice Charting Working Group – V Hamburg – April 19-23, 2004 Proposal for a Near Term Objective Toward a Global Ice Mapping System • Within the next 2 years, all participating Ice Services agree on one common database schema for their ice mapping systems

  3. Action Item 5.6 • Clearly define the objective of developing common data base scheme i.e. seamless customer support vs ice service interoperability. Outline a project plan including goals for the first technical workshop on the issue

  4. The virtual world ice service

  5. Ice Service Interoperability • Ice Services can easily and seamlessly exchange ice chart information • Reduce duplication of effort with simple cut & paste from a neighbouring Service’s chart • With appropriate agreements • Support production of a common global ice analysis • Where every service concentrates on the areas it knows best

  6. Seamless Customer Support • A mariner travelling across oceans should be able to access ice information from different local authorities in the same manner and with the same look and feel • Mariners tell us that they do not want to use special systems to get ice information • Electronic Navigation Charts and ECDIS are rapidly becoming the standard for route planning and ship navigation • Ice Services should provide ice chart information in a format compatible with ENCs • Electronic chart version of the ice chart facsimile broadcast standards or GMDSS NAVTEX standards

  7. Ice Service interoperability - Seamless customer support Are not mutually exclusive objectives

  8. Objectives for Technical Workshop • Education • To understand better what we mean by interoperable data formats • To appreciate the benefits • Decision • Where we want to go with interoperable data formats • What can we achieve within our own organizations and what can we achieve together • Commitment to Action • To develop action plans, that we can all commit to, for going forward

  9. Outline for Technical Workshop • Education • Ice in ECDIS • Tim Evangelatos & Doug O’Brien - Canadian experts on ECDIS and IHO under contract to the Canadian Hydrographic Service • Sea Ice Presentation for ECDIS • Yuri Scherbakov – AARI expert on ECDIS • Interoperable Data Formats in Production Systems • Dave Denault – CIS expert on Geographic Information Systems • Brian Scarlett – ESRI contractor at CIS

  10. Outline for Technical Workshop • Decision • Lunchtime discussions • Plenary discussion • Breakout Groups • Operational Ice Information Producers • Standards Enforcers • Commitment to Action • Breakout group reports • Workshop Report
