We are therefore God’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. (2 Corinthians 哥 林 多 后 书5:20a) Integrating Faith and Work

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  3. Integrating Faith & Work基督徒的工作观 I. Clarifying your Calling (“看清你的呼召”) • How does our work fit into God’s redemptive plans? • II. Workplace Spirituality (“基督与职业”) • How do we live out a genuine faith in a pluralistic society?

  4. What is a calling何为呼召? A Divine Commissioning (神圣的的使命) A Mission from God (神给的任务) A Heavenly Entrustment (从天而来的託付) Have you been called by God?

  5. Two types of Callings 两种呼召: • General calling (普徧) A divine entrustment given to all believers 给每一位信徒的 • The Great Commission (Matthew28:18-20) 大使命 • Salt and Light (Matthew5:13-16) 做鹽做光 • The Greatest Commandment (Matthew22:38) 最大的诫命 • Our Ambassadorship (2 Corinthians 5:14-21) 基督的使者 • Specific calling (特别) Instructions on a particular mission or role 特别的带领 • Abraham; Jonah; Paul (Macedonia) 亚布拉罕,约拿,保罗 • Always within the context of the General 总是在普遍呼召下

A. Do you regard your current job as a “calling”? (do you feel your job has eternal significance?) B. How do you think your job is related to God’s overall redemptive plans? C. What do you think is the role of the “common” believer in God’s redemptive plans

  7. The Sacred/Secular Chasm 属神与属世的分隔 • “As Christians we have over many years allowed a chasm to grow between our faith and our day-to-day work, a chasm that God never intended.” Source: Sherman, Doug, and William Hendricks, Your Work Matters to God, Navpress: Colorado Springs, CO, 1987.

  8. Three Inadequate views of work三种不够完全的工作观 Careerism: Going for it! We think glorifying God at work is tantamount to succeeding in our career. We view tangible measures of success as God’s blessing and affirmation. As a result, we adopt a secular view of work (not unlike those of non-believers). We buy into a dichotomous view of work and faith, in which secular work has no inherent dignity or lasting value (it is a form of punishment). Implicit is a ranking of careers on the basis of this hierarchy(“sacred” over “secular”, and “soul activities” over “body activities.” ). Your job is first and foremost a platform for evangelism. Here evangelism is narrowly-defined as “confronting non-Christians with a clear presentation of the facts of the gospel and an invitation to accept these facts.”Implicit is the view that your work is only a means to an end.

  9. Biblical View of Work 圣经的工作观 [Much more positive than the other three!] A: Work has intrinsic value(it is inherently worth doing)工作有内涵价值 • God is a worker • God created people as workers • God created people to be His coworkers B: Work has instrumental value (it is the means to several ends)工作有功用价值 • Through work we serve people • Through work we meet our own needs & our family’s needs • Through work we earn money to give to others • Through work we love God

  10. C: The effects of sin on work 罪对工作的影响 • Sin has made work harder (it is “corrupted”) 罪使工作辛苦, • It affects our coworkers and the system • Much of what we face is in an unredeemed state • But 但是 。。。 • Work is not a result of the curse. The nature of work is good, not evil; Work was given before the Fall • Christ wants us in the world. This is very clear in the Bible. “Not of it, but in it.” And he made us adequate. We are made for the Street. [约翰福音John 17:15-18] • This is our calling! He uses the workplace, with all its sinfulness, to build our faith and character

• 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

  12. Our responsibility to witness 我们传福音的责任: • Through our words (口传) • Directly sharing the gospel message • Through our works (身传) • Workplace spirituality • Through supporting others (助传) • Prayer and financial; beyond tithing

  13. II. Workplace Spirituality

  14. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 14 For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

The ministry of reconciliation

  16. 1. 2. 3. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 14 For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view.
