  1. HBD Update of activities at WI Itzhak Tserruya HBD meeting, BNL, August 31, 2005 • GEM production • HBD box design • PCB design

  2. 12 GEMs(9 standard + 3 Au plated) and 15 frames GEM pilot production (I) • Tooling for GEM stretching: same as for full scale prototype. • Tooling for gluing GEM on frame designed, constructed and successfully used. GEM Stretching device Frame

  3. GEM pilot production (II) • 3-GEM stack assembled: • - 2 standard GEMs  OK • - 1st Au plated failed, 2nd Au plated OK • - successfully tested with 55Fe • All other 8 GEMs are framed, equipped with • surface mount resistors and ready to be tested. No single discharge occurred

  4. GEM production • GEM final order placed: • - no changes wrt to pilot production • - 65 standard GEMs • - 35 Au plated GEMs • - 100 frames • Expected delivery rate: • - 20 standard + 10 Au plated + 30 frames per month. • - negotiating shipment every 2 or 3 weeks. • QA: CERN will continue pre-testing of GEMs prior of shipment. • But will replace any GEM found defective in the tests at WI.

  5. HBD final design: changes wrt prototype From July’s presentation All have been made • Several changes are being made in the design of the final HBD wrt the prototype. The changes are made: • to reduce the z envelop of the detector • in response of lessons learned from the prototype • The main changes are: • a single 100 micron window instead of a 2x50 micron window • thinner covers, ½” honeycomb instead of ¾” in the prototype  gain 2 x 6 mm in the z envelop • a thin FR4 frame all around the covers  prevents deformation of the covers at the places of the screws. • head of the screws immersed inside the frame  gain 2 x 4 mm in the z envelop • the z envelop is now 656.4 mm (down by 23.6 mm from the original value of 680 mm) • more symmetrical shape, closer to two half cylinders • 6 mm clearance between the two halves of the detector

  6. Clearance +/- 3 mm Z= 656.4 mm HBD final design 2x21 HV connectors serving 2x3 detector modules Gas out Removable window FR4 frame all around the cover

  7. HBD exploded view

  8. HBD final design • We have reconsidered again the nominal vs the retracted position. Nominal position Retracted position • Propose to keep the design optimized for the nominal position.

  9. PCB design • Constraint on maximum number of pads: 1152 pads per arm or 192 pads per panel • Would be much easier to have a round number like 1200 pads per arm or 200 pads per panel. • If this is not possible: • a) we will have to reduce the number of pads • or • b) we will not instrument all of them.

  10. Another attempt to measure N0 ? • We are exploring the possibility to measure N0 at PSI. • There could be a 3 week time slot at the end of October beginning of November in the PiE1 beam line. • Currently investigating the logistics.
