  1. YEAR 6 HISTORY (Lesson 1) What can we learn about recent history from studying the life of a famous person? Life in the 1950s

Learning Objectives Pupils will learn: • to identify John Lennon from pictorial evidence and extract information; • to investigate, using secondary sources, some characteristic features of the 1950s; • to carry out personal research; • to identify key reasons for the growth in popularity of pop music.

  3. Success Criteria: At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: • Recognise John Lennon in a given picture. • Describe John Lennon’s contribution to pop music. • Investigate and describe some characteristic features of the 1950’s.

  4. Starter Activity: Do you know who this man is?

  6. This man is John Lennon. He is famous for being in the band The Beatles. The Beatles were very popular in the 1960s. • Here are some photographs of John Lennon when he was young. Do these pictures show you anything about his childhood? What kind of family do you think he came from?

  8. John Lennon was born on the 9th October, 1940. His father was often away at sea, so John did not spend much time with him. In 1944, John’s parents divorced John’s mother lived in a very small flat, so when John was five, she sent him to live with his aunt in this house. John saw his mother a lot and she taught him to play the banjo. Growing up in the 1950s was quite exciting! Before then, there was the world war which made it difficult to get daily supplies of food, clothing and essential commodities to make every day living comfortable and people had to depend on rations. Rationingfrom World War II ended in 1954. People had more money to spend on things like food, fashion, music and improving their homes.
