BMA • Gives guidance to doctors and medical staff on euthanasia • VE is illegal and is not supported by the BMA • Guidelines are there to help and protect the doctor • They provide a standard or a framework that all doctors can work within • They allow for a consistency in decision making • It recognises a difference in terminating a life and treating a patient in a way that will end their life • It supports doctors in their duty to ensure that patients die with dignity and with as little suffering as possible • Hippocratic oath to preserve life

The Law in the UK • Voluntary euthanasia is illegal • The patient consenting does not provide a defence for the doctor • UK law does not allow anyone to terminate the life of a person to end their suffering • Anyone assisting in the euthanasia of another person will be charged with murder, this may be reduced to man slaughter • For it to be justified it must be part of medical practice but excludes voluntary • Some doctors may perform passive or active euthanasia to end the suffering of a terminally ill patient
