What is globalization of learning? • Composite of the global knowledge, skills, and awareness that allows one to cope and function effectively with diverse cultures and societies, while recognizing that all systems are interdependent • Others say: Globalization is the “flow of technology, economy, knowledge, people, values, ideas” across borders (quoted in Kreber, 2009) • Internationalization responds to globalization so people can work together • It raises “world-mindedness” and fosters responsible and engaged citizens of the world • Bikson & Law, 1994; Kreber, 2009

Context for globalization in education “Not location dependent, but location responsive” Perspective should be worldwide, like the economy Not everyone comes from U.S. or Western culture/bias Move beyond national vs. international to “global” Each individual will have to interact with more than 1 culture & language To be competent and effective in new contexts: One must widen his/her knowledge base + openness; increase his adaptability, and ability to learn • Bikson & Law, 1994

  5. So, are we globalizing or internationalizing? Is it international student and faculty mobility; international research contact numbers; study abroad campus resources and/or international student offices; or teaching English as second language, etc? Is it the integration of international & intercultural perspectives in teaching, service, & research? What is the goal? How should we create diverse communities of learning ? • Who are the inhabitants? How do we measure?

How does one integrate globalization into teaching? • Assist students in examining own values, perspectives & assumptions • One example approach • Shrink the world to a “Global village of 100” • Assign each student to a role (spreadsheet available for assignments) to proportionately represent 6.8 billion people • Students blog about how global villager is affected by global issues & trends • Have each student begin with • name, age, sex, city, country, ethnicity, religion, life expectancy, language, annual income, occupation, nature of communication, transportation used, other relevant information • Move on to topics of current & future population change, global warming, conflicts, technological change, etc. Falk et al., 2010; http://www.miniature-earth.com/
