  2. Journal Prompt #2 • Why are some people dissatisfied in this dystopia?  Do they seek ways to change or alter the system or the government?  If so, how do they take action to affect or change the system?

Mini Project #1 and #2: Dystopian Elements • #1: Find three (3) dystopian characteristics in Catching Fire • #2: Find three (3) dystopian characteristics in your choice book. • FOR BOTH: Write the characteristic and explain it within the context of the novel. • EX: Oppression by government—The reaping was designed to target the past victors in order to put an end to rebellion.

  4. Important dates & rubric • Due Date #1: When you finish Catching Fire • Due Date #2: When you finish choice book • You need to turn this in when you finish your books. Please let me know you are turning it in. • Put it in the box. • All writing/coloring must be neat and legible.

  5. Mini Project #3:Dystopia vs. Utopia • Create a mini mind map with at least 4 dystopian characteristics and 4 utopian characteristics. • This is specific to our Dystopia vs. Utopia lesson…AKA: you do not have to pull from your books for this mini project. • You will want to go back and look at your notes from this day. The PowerPoint that we used will also be on my website under the Dystopian Unit folder.

  6. Important dates & rubric • Due Date: Tuesday, December 10th • You can turn this in any time between now and Dec. 10th. • All writing/coloring must be neat and legible. • This can be hand written or typed. • It needs to have color, and try to be as creative as possible.

  7. Mini Project #4: Symbolism • Find five (5) symbols in the novel. • Print symbols out or draw them. They should be no more than one inch by one inch. Cut them out if needed. • Identify what each of the five symbols represent and explain in a full sentence in your own words—NOT COPIED FROM THE INTERNET! I will check this. • Find a quote from the novel that supports the use of this symbol. Write the quote and pg. #. • This can be hand written or typed. • It needs to have color, and try to be as creative as possible.

  8. Important dates & rubric • Due Date:Tuesday, December 10th • You can turn these in any time between now and Dec. 10th for both books. • Put pictures and sheet of paper in a ziplockbag and turn it in. Make sure to write your name on the bag. • All writing/coloring must be neat and legible.

  9. Example: • Peeta’s paintings: • Peetais an artist. When Katniss sees his paintings, she is horrified because they depict all they experienced during the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. • “I hate them,” I say. I can almost smell the blood, the dirt, the unnatural breath of the mutt. “All I do is go around trying to forget the arena and you’ve brought it back to life. How do you remember these things so exactly?” “I see them every night,” he says. (Page 53) No...you may NOT use this example. 

Mini Project #5: Theme • Find 2 major themes in Catching Fire • Find 2 major themes in your choice novel • Write your themes in thematic statements—you should have 4 statements total (2 per book). • EX: Catching Fire shows that love can be a very difficult emotion. • You must explain each theme in a short paragraph of 5-7 sentences. Your paragraph should have textual evidence from the story to support your theme. • EX: Love is proven to be a very difficult emotion because Katniss continually struggles with her feelings for Gale and Peeta. She…

  11. Mini Project #5: Theme Then, • Create a 3D representation of the themes in the books—pop-up creation, foldable of some kind, etc. • It must it in a 6” by 6” square space. • It must neat, creative and colorful.

  12. Important dates & rubric • Due Date:Tuesday, December 10th • You can turn this in any time between now and Dec. 10th. • All writing/coloring must be neat and legible.

  13. Mini Project #6:Character Playlist • Select ONE character from ONE of your Dystopian novels. • Create a playlist for your character with at least 12 songs. • On a typical playlist, you will find songs that represent varying emotions of the listener. • Make sure your list represents at least THREE DIFFERENT EMOTIONS experienced by the character during the story. • Ex: Fury, euphoria, depression – notice that each of these are distinct and are unlike the other • You may have more than three, but that is your minimum requirement. • Explain each song choice in at least two – three well written sentences that use words in the lyrics to help explain your reasoning. • You don’t have to buy the songs; you just need to make a list of the song choices. • You should list these songs together and make it look nice and colorful.
