  3. Physics Laboratory Course (PHY 222) • Faculty: Prof. Steve Blusk • Lab sections taught by teaching assistants • Separate course • Register separately • Independently graded • Lab manuals will be distributed during lab meetings

  4. Textbooks and other required hardware/software: • University Physics, Volume 2, by H. D. Young and R. A. Freedman, Addison Wesley, 11th Edition (required). • L. C. McDermott and P. S. Schaffer, Tutorials in Introductory Physics. (Two green books. One with punched holes and the other without. ) You should have this from Phy 211 last semester. • PRS RF Student Clicker/Remote • Registration to Mastering physics, the online homework system.

  7. Prerequisite • Physics Prerequisite Physics 211 • Math Prerequisite and Co-requisiteCompletion of a first course in calculus is required, with a passing grade and enrollment in the second semester of calculus.

  8. Course objectives • To develop a good understanding of important concepts in electromagnetism • To apply these concepts to familiar and unfamiliar situations • To solve physics problems (both qualitative and qualitative ones)

  9. Lectures • Finish reading assignment beforehand! • Attending the lectures will greatly improve your odds for success in the course. • New concept every lecture! • You lose 10% final grade if you miss all lectures • Use your clicker to answer questions • Discuss clicker questions with you neighbors • Respect others: keep quite in auditorium • Turn off cell phone before lecture

Workshops • ~20 students, 1 graduate teaching assistant, ? undergraduate coaches • During workshops you will work in groups of 2 or 3 students • Wednesdays -- tutorials, practice exams • Fridays -- problem solving activities • TAs and coaches are there to help you but not to lecture • Hands on learning experience! • Attendance is required (5% of your course grade)

  11. Workshop sections for Physics 211 Sections 002 - 008: B129W Physics Bldg. Sections 009 - 010: 104 Physics Bldg. All sections meet Wednesdays and Fridays.

  12. Homework • homework assignment due each week. • Written homework • Handed out weekend, due the next week Friday before the workshop. • Collected by your TA. Graded and returned to you next Wednesday. • Late home works will not be accepted. • Solutions will be posted on the course web page. • Collaboration encouraged. (But not copy and paste!) • Online homework from Mastering Physics. • Handed out every week. Due time will be shown there too. • Graded automatically by the system. • Late homework will incur penalty (20%). • You will need an access code to sign up with Mastering Physics. It comes with you new textbook. If you have trouble, call customer service 800 922 0579).

Mid-Term Exams • 3 mid-term exams • Each focus on previous ~3-4 weeks, may include earlier material as well • 80-minutes each, during lecture period • Seating chart posted outside Stolkin • Closed book, but can bring one 8.5” x 11” sheet of handwritten notes (no photocopies) • No make-up exam • Exam 1 -- Feb. 8

  14. Final Exam • Cumulative • 2 hours: Thur, May 3,  7:15 - 9:15 p.m. • No make-up exam

  15. Grades • Mid-term 1-3 (drop one) 40% • Final exam 25% • Homework 20% • Workshop participation 5% • Lecture attend. + clicker questions 10% The grades are normalized such that the average course grade is a B- or better, depending on the performance of the class as a whole.

  16. How to succeed in this course • Read the reading assignments before lecture. • Attend the lectures. • Join discussions, use your clicker. • Do the Homework and participate in workshops. • Work together. • Get help early and often from: instructor, TA, and coaches. • Attend the clinic and the instructor’s office hours.

PRS rf Sign on Process (First Time) • Turn on Clicker - Battery symbol displayed • Stop scan by hitting “ * ” on the keypad • Hit “ * ” again which takes you to the Setup Menu • Scroll Up to ID: • Hit “Send/Enter” key (green) • Type ID number • Hit “Send/Enter” • Hit “ * ” to exit Setup Menu • ID now stored in the unit (for Non Loaner units) • Can now rescan by selecting New Class Scan, or by turning unit off and on.
