  1. The Heart: Associated Great Vessels • Pulmonary veins (four) • Enter left atrium • Arteries: Away from heart, have thicker walls (red-oxy) • Veins: Towards, thinner walls (blue-deoxy) • Exception: Pulmonaries • Pulmonary artery (blue) • Pulmonary vein (red)

  2. Pathway of Blood Flow through the Heart • Deoxygenated blood from the body and heart muscle is returned to the right atrium of the heart via superior/inferior vena cavae. AV valves open. • Blood flows from r.atrium through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. Atria begin to contract as blood fills the r. ventricle. • The r. ventricle contracts(AV valves close), pumping blood through the pulmonary semilunar valves into the pulmonary trunk.

  3. Pathway of Blood Flow through the Heart • Pulmonary trunk branches into the pulmonary arteries. The deoxgenated blood moves from the pulmonary arteries into the lungs. • In lungs, oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is unloaded. • Oxygenated blood returns to heart by pulmonary veins. • Pulmonary veins empty into the left atrium.

  4. Pathway of Blood Flow through the Heart • Blood flows from l. atrium to the l.ventricle through the bicuspid valve. Left atrium contracts to push the rest of the blood into the ventricle. • L. ventricle contracts, pumping blood through the aortic semilunar valve, then into the aorta. • Aorta branches into the arteries, which carries blood throughout the body.   5. Coronary Circulation • Blood in the heart chambers does not nourish the myocardium • The heart has its own nourishing circulatory system • Coronary arteries are the first branches of the aorta and they take blood to the heart muscle • Cardiac veins return blood from heart muscle • Blood empties into the right atrium via the coronary sinus (vein)
