  1. Cryptojacking malware on the rise

  2. The number of uses of malware that steals other people’s computing power to generate cryptocurrencies rose more than 600 per cent in the first quarter of 2018 in a sign that cyber criminals are increasingly exploiting the nascent digital currency technology.

  3. Cryptojacking involves hijacking the processing power of unsuspecting internet browsers

  4. With the rise in value of cryptocurrencies, market forces are driving criminals to cryptojacking and the theft of cryptocurrency

  5. Some large companies have fallen prey to cryptojacking, including carmaker Tesla and insurer Aviva. While victims do not have to pay an upfront fee to criminals, they can experience slower computers and higher server bills.

  6. In April, Google announced it would stop listing extensions for its Chrome browser that mine cryptocurrency because 90 per cent of such software on its web store had violated its policies.

  7. Last year, numerous business were attacked by the WannaCry ransomware. 

  8. Raising funds in cryptocurrencies may be attractive for criminals because the assets are held digitally via electronic identities that in many cases allow the owners to remain anonymous.
