House of Representatives House of Representatives (aka the House) ~ made up of 180 members (elected every 2 years) ~ presided over by the Speaker of the House who is elected by all the members of the House (he/she is in charge) ~ Speaker is usually a member of the Party in power (the Party with the most members) Leaders of the House: (1) Speaker of the House (2) Majority Leader (encourages members to vote alike) (3) Minority Leader (encourages members to vote alike) (4) Floor Leader (promotes Governor’s interest in the House)

  8. Senate ~ made up of 56 members (elected every 2 years) ~ presided over by the Lieutenant Governor Leaders of the Senate: • Lieutenant Governor (elected by the citizens) ~ he/she may be a member of the minority party ~ appoints Senate members to committees

The Committee System ~ A committee is a group of people appointed for a specific function (each committee has a specific focus) ~ most of the work of the House and Senate take place in committees ~ House has 36 standing committees and Senate has 26 ~ each General Assembly member must serve on at least 2 committees ~ Committees create, amend, change, or kill legislation (possible laws)

  10. 4 Committee Types 1) Standing Committee: permanent for every legislative session 2) Ad hoc: created for a special purpose 3)Joint Committee: has both Senate and House members 4) Conference Committee: created when House and Senate create different versions of a bill. Members of this committee come from House and Senate and must compromise to make one bill for it to become law
