  2. The Radar Operators Job • Set up the radars properly • Maintain and monitor data collection… • Take good detailed notes! • Run the Doppler analysis package • Secure the radar data tapes at end of flight

  3. The Radar System • Lower Fuselage radar: LF or “belly radar” Need to optimize tilt angle to minimize sea clutter • Tail Doppler radar: TA Need to set scan mode, tile angle and Pulse Repetition Frequency. Monitor for noise. • Nose radar: Weather avoidance radar, controlled form cockpit.

  4. WP-3D Aircraft and their Radars

  6. Radar System Setup • “Do no harm”: Ask AOC for help if you cannot set up or operate the radars. • Use the trackball to access the menus. • Do not forget to select UPDATE before exiting a menu. • Do not leave the trackball active as it locks out other users!

  7. Trackball Controls All • Press all 3 to activate • Select display 1, 2 pr 3 • Left button selects • Right button deselects • Central nurron zooms • Trackball moves cursor and scrpll bars

  8. Accessing the Menus • Select a display with the radar you want to change. • Select “Setup” in the User Menu. • Pick setup menu: TA Setup, LF Setup, Data Management, System Status • Make changes, select update • Click right button to exit.

  13. Adjusting Tilt Angles • Select appropriate display for radar. • Click on TILT. • Roll trackball left or right to adjust angle. • Click left button to select angle. • Click right to free up display.

  14. Adjusting LF tilt

  17. Adjustung TA tilt angle • Do not try to adjust FrenchAntenna – on NOAA 43 in 2008 • If SCAN MODE is Continuous set tilt angle to 0 degrees. • If scanning in Fore/Aft (FAST) set tilt angle to 20 degrees. • Note: Default mode ar start up is FAST but you may need to change tilt from 0 to 20.

  18. System Status Menu • Shows ststem status and contrils radar operation. • Do NOT mess with any of the settings – leave that to the AOC Data Tech. • Bottom line of mene displays errpr messages. Cleat by clicking on messages – but best left for DataTech to examine.

  20. Please take good notes! • Scan modes, PRF, and time of any changes to radar operation. • Note time of each turn. • Note storm center position, time and movement for each penetration. • Note radar down times. • Note noisy TA display.

  21. Noisy TA images: noisy Doppler degrades radar analysis LF tilt change with altitude change Display not updating: means data are not beinf recorded either. Tape not recording: If tape stops then data flow to workstation stops. Tell Tech of any ptoblems Stuff to Look Out For

  23. Clean Doppler Data • yuiuk

  24. Look for Water in the TA Radome Not much you can do about it, but please note it if you see it.

  25. Obtain radar tapes from AOC Data Tech. Obtain radar capture files on thumb drive from Data Tech. Turn over data and radar forms to Lead Project Scientist. If in Barbados, purchase Rum for those of us stranded in Miami. At the End of Flight
