  2. Objectives • Define “communicable disease” and provide examples of communicable diseases. • Identify risk, protective, and preventativefactors that influence communicable diseases (to include hand washing and universal precautions).

  3. Disease Activity • Rules: • You are WALKING! If I see you moving at a speed faster than walking I’m going to ask you to sit out of the activity. • You cannot block the disease carrier from sticking you with a sticker. • Disease carrier – be appropriate

  4. Disease Activity • Ms. Popielaski gave you “healthy germs” represented by the sticker. • Disease carrier (round 1) keep track of numbers of stickers • Disease carrier replicated (round 2) keep track of number of stickers

  5. Disease Activity • Round 1 – disease carrier sticks as many people with stickers as possible in one minute • Round 2 – every person disease carrier sticks with a sticker, gets a sheet and becomes a disease carrier.

  8. Communicable Disease • A communicable disease is a disease that can be passed to a person from another person, animal, or object.

Disease Vocabulary • Pathogens – disease-causing organisms • Infection – a condition that occurs when pathogens enter the body, multiply, and cause harm. • Universal precaution – actions taken to prevent the spread of diseases by treating all blood as if it were contaminated. • Transmission – passing on a disease

Closure • Hand-washing, not sharing personal health products (toothbrushes, towels, hairbrushes, cell phones), stay away from people who are ill, get vaccinations,, practice universal precautions to avoid contact with body fluids of others, don’t share food and drink, keep your immune system strong through healthy diet and exercise, clean your personal items.
