  3. Freshmen Year • I applied for Living Area Counsel (LAC) to help lead my RA with hall events and living situations • This was my first leadership experience at APU • As LAC, I assisted in creating community, plan resident events, and helped my freshmen RA in any way possible. • I was mentored by my freshmen RA (Resident Advisor) and CA (Community Advisor) and was greatly impacted by their leadership ability and style • Their influence in my life encouraged me to apply for different leadership positions on campus and eventually begin the leadership minor • For more detail, visit http://nickyslavich.wordpress.com/

Soph0more Year • I began my journey as an Alpha Leader • Responsible for development of 7 freshmen students • Held weekly meetings to talk about life and play games • Met with other Alpha Leaders to discuss strengths and weaknesses of their groups • In the Fall of 2011, I took my first leadership class • Began Foundations of Leadership 201 with Sandy Hough • In the Spring of 2012, I took Values and Virtues • Co-led by Paul Kaak and David Weeks • Difficult class, but learned the most and incredibly rewarding • Got accepted as RA in March of 2012

Junior Year • Was a Residential Advisor for 35 freshmen students • Supervised, disciplined, and lived with 35 men • Planned and coordianted hall-wide events • Mentored select students • Fall 2012, I took Strengths and Skills • Taught by Ed Barron • Revolved around StrengthFinder test and had assignments according to Top 5 Strenghts • Spring 2013, I took Influence and Impact • Taught by Kristin Ritzau • Demanding class as far as school work, but extremely memorable and benefical • Taught how to be effective change agent through Kotter and ABCD model

Senior Year • Did not have official on campus student leadership position • Mentored guys from the hall from previous year • Enhanced relationship with roommates, girlfriend, and Christ • Got two off-campus jobs • Server/Cashier at The Market on Holly • Sales Associate at Juiced Served Here • Spring 2014, took final Leadership Class • Practicum 401 with Jeff Boian and Michael Whyte • Learned real-life skills and finished leadership minor

  7. A Great Leader • In my opinion, the leadership minor taught me many things, namely how to be a great leader. Here are some characteristics I found that every great leader should possess • Humility—someone who points other to God, not themself • Initiative—someone who is not afraid to step up • Confidence—someone who is still humble, yet sure in their decisions • Love—someone who shows Christ’s love above all • Servant-hearted—someone who constantly sacrifices for followers • Wise—someone with life experience who can speak truth

Faith Integration • This is probably what I find to be the most important and influential part of my leadership journey • As a Christian, I hope to lead in a way that honors Christ above all • One verse that stands out to me (a personal favorite) is: • “He must become greater; I must become less” John 3 :30 • I want my leadership to reflect the greatest leader of all and if I can do that, I would define myself a great leader.

  9. Leadership Role Models • As a leader, it is important to not only be leading others, but to constantly be led by influential and important people. Here’s a short list of some people in my life who have made me the leader I am today: • My Parents—Jeff and CeCeSlavich • Youth Pastor—Justin Richter • Charlie Moore—Director of APU Residence Life • Jonny Hong—APU Residence Director • Brian Terada—Freshmen Year RA • Without the love and support of these people, I would not be where I am today. I feel infinitely grateful to the time and energy that they have put into my life.

  10. The Future As an APU graduate in officially 48 hours, I have absolutely no idea what the future holds. It’s exciting and terrifying. I am usually someone who is thoroughly planned and knows what is coming next…but I can genuinely say that I am trusting God completely for this next season. I pray that I would be a responsible leader who loves others and loves God. Regardless of what the future brings with a career and family, that is what I long for most of all.
