    5. How many licks does it take???

    6. Learning Record versus Plan of Study Traditional Four Year Plan A format that serves as a learning record and looks toward the past Plan of Study A format that identifies what is to be achieved and looks toward the future TWhats the difference between a Learning Record and a Plan of Study? 7. Plans of Study: Definitions A personalized PLAN OF STUDY is a learner owned, comprehensive, career focused, educational strategy. TJust what is a personalized Plan of Study? Its a TOOL that is a learner owned (so its always going to be the STUDENTS document and it should be accessible wherever the student is, CareerTech, high school, post-secondary), comprehensive, career focused, educational strategy. Or in other words.

    8. Simply put: A Plan of Study is a roadmap that guides students through the coursework and activities that will help them to achieve their personal career goals. TRead slide. We all use roadmaps (some of us more than others!) to get to where we want to go. Thats what a Plan of Study is. Sometimes life happens and we have to take detours along the way or we change our minds about where we want to go. However, POS are flexible and can be changed at will. Hopefully, students will become more interested and involved in their educational process when they can see the relevance of what they are doing (classes, etc.) and can eventually become the driver of their Plan.TRead slide. 9. Wheres the map? This road map should include: Graduation requirements Approved rigorous coursework for the students educational and career goals Developmentally appropriate work-based learning experiences

    10. Cluster and Pathway Sample Plans of Study The Cluster and Pathway sample Plans of Study can be used to assist students in completing their personalized Plans of Study. Cluster Cluster Plans of Study are focused on a broad set of related occupations that share commonalities Pathway Pathway Plans of Study are focused on a subset of related occupations within a Career Cluster T There seems to be a little confusion about the different POS. In an effort to clarify things a little, we have come up with these definitions: (Read slide) T--We are hopeful that when you sit down with a student to make his/her personal Plan of Study, and once the student has completed some assessments to determine his interests/abilities, the student will be able to discover a career area. Then he may be able to narrow down his choices by looking at a sample Cluster POS. Once he has chosen a Cluster area, then he can narrow his choices even further by looking at a Pathway POS. Then a counselor can help him decide a career major and the subsequent courses. T There seems to be a little confusion about the different POS. 11. Also: Our Cluster and Pathway sample Plans of Study show a sequence of courses They show possible options for recommended course work. They are SAMPLES and meant to be used as a guide.

    12. Here is a sample plan of study with suggestions of what courses to put where. This is how we put our sample cluster and pathway plans together: has academic subjects, CTE options, and continues on to postsecondary. We included work-based optons for check off and places for signatures for review documentation. The occupations included in the cluster or pathway are included to help or remind the student what occupations this plan of study can lead to.Here is a sample plan of study with suggestions of what courses to put where. 13. Here is one done for the Information Cluster, Information Support and Services Pathway This plan contains options (more choices on the plan than can be taken) in order to give a broad view of what courses are important for this pathway. We did not list a specific course for a specific year due to the variety of local choices. The CTE majors are hot linked to the website that will show what courses make up that major. It goes from 9th grade to postsecondary education-again trying to show connections and broad course selections. Schools are encouraged to adapt these to fit their schedules. Here is one done for the Information Cluster, Information Support and Services Pathway This plan contains options (more choices on the plan than can be taken) in order to give a broad view of what courses are important for this pathway. 14. What do Plans of Study do? Plans of Study meet benchmarks within the National and Oklahoma standards for school counseling Plans of Study take into account what happens to students outside the walls of the school building Plans of Study can provide a process and product for students to use that opens them up to unique educational and career opportunities Plans of Study provide personalized career planning that helps students take responsibility for and have ownership of their career decisions. T(1) POS fall right in step with the school counseling standards for Oklahoma and also the National standards. (2) Another thing that is different about POS vs Learner Record is that POS take into account what happens to students outside the walls of the school building. What activities they are involved in, i.e job shadowing, mentorships, etc. (3) Read #3. T(1) POS fall right in step with the school counseling standards for Oklahoma and also the National standards. 16. Guidance What should we do? Develop a Plan of Study for each student Strengthen the Plan of Study to be career focused, NOT focused on meeting graduation requirements Work to connect guidance strategies from middle school to high school to tech center to college Recognize the value of a career not just getting a job

    17. However, remember The School Counselor is NOT the Guidance Program. It takes everyonecounselors do not work alone. Its a collaborative effort with all educators, parents and community.

    18. Questions How are you developing Plans of Study with your students? Who are you working with to implement Plans of Study? Not a indictment against counselor you work with have you lived in their world lately? Too many students, too many duties not related to counseling, too many EOIs.
