  1. Federation By Echoe

  2. Why and How did Australia become a Nation? Federation occurred when six separate British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria became one nation. They kept the systems of government they had as separate colonies but also agreed to add a federal government which was to be responsible for matters concerning the whole nation. When the constitution of Australia came into force, on the 1st of January 1901, all of the colonies became states of the Commonwealth of Australia.

  3. Why and How did Australia become a Nation? A number of conventions were held in the 1890s to help develop a constitution for the Commonwealth. Sir Henry Parkes, premier of New South Wales, played a big role in this process. Fiji and New Zealand were originally part of this process, but decided not to join the federation. Sir Edmund Barton, was the caretaker Prime Minister of Australia at the inaugural national election in 1901. The result if this election was to confirm Edmund Barton’s role as Prime Minister.

  4. How Did Australian Society Change During This Period Of Time? One way Australian society changed during this point of time, is the way you had to travel between states (colonies). Before the time of federation the train lines in the 6 states were different widths so you couldn't’t just travel between states (colonies), you had to show documentation, have your bags checked ect.

  5. Who Were The People Who Came To Australia? The first British man to come to Australia, and explore it was Captain James Cook (7/11/1728 – 14/2/1779) , in 1770, and from then on convicts came to Australia. The convicts were people who had committed crimes in England, so they were sent to Australia to do hard labour for their time sentence. The convicts built many recognisable buildings and structures around Australia. Later on around the time federation happened refugees started coming to Australia for a better life. Even though all of these people came to Australia, the Aboriginals were in Australia 40,000 years (approximately) before Captain Cook came, and are the true custodians of this land.

  6. Sir Henry Parkes In the 1890s sir Henry Parkeswas often called 'The Father of Federation'. What was his contribution to the federal cause?

Sir Henry Parkesconvinced his fellow Premiers and politicians to take federation seriously at the Melbourne Conference of 1890. But his legacy to the federal movement was not in the fine detail of the Constitution. Parkes presented a vision of a united Australia and left legal definitions to others.

Sir Henry Parkes, however, did have a lasting effect on the way Australians refer to their national government. The draft constitution of 1891 called the new nation 'The Commonwealth of Australia'. The title was suggested by Sir Henry Parkes. Perhaps, for that alone, Sir Henry Parkesdeserves to be remembered as the 'Father' of the Commonwealth.

Sir Henry Parkesdied in 1896. He did not live to be the first Prime Minister of Australia, a position many thought lay at the heart of his interest in federation.

  7. Architecture This period of time has left an architectural style prevalent at the time, commonly known as Federation Architecture or Federation Style. A few things that represent federation architecture are; Terracotta bricks High ceilings Fire places Chimneys Verandahs Outdoor toilet (out house was only used during federation time, now they may have an indoor toilet depending on the house) Stain glass windows Closed in rooms and tight walls Gables Ridge tiles Sun rise roof (to represent a new dawn) ect.
