This speech was called the Tenterfield address and impacted on Australia being federated.

  3. How did Australia become a nation? • All the colonies had there own customs houses, railway tracks (you had to change train to get into another state). All the states even had there own army! • At the time no-one thought highly of federating Australia it took some small organizations to get the idea home. • Alfred Deakin was a man who played a vital role in federating Australia. • After a few major conferences the government decided Australia should be federated and in 1901 it was but they had to find a capital city. Melbourne and Sydney disputed over who would be the capital but finally they decided to build a new capital in NSW but 100 only miles away from Victoria. Melbourne was the temporary capital.

  4. HOW DID AUSTRALAN SOCIETY CHANGE IN THIS PERIOD OF TIME • The houses changed, they were elegant with nicely cut gardens and patterns which were more suited to the Australian climate. • Border taxes were abolished (free trade agreement) which enabled growth in trade • The Kanakas were people from Papua New Guinea who were forced to work as slaves in Queensland sugar cane fields. After federation they were set free. • Each colony had there own armies and after federation one army was formed which was much stronger and bigger • Travel between colonies became easier as train lines were connected unlike before when people had to switch trains to get from state to state. • Different people were allowed into Australia whereas before non-whites weren’t allowed to immigrate to Australia.

  5. Alfred deakin • Alfred Deakin played a pivotal role in federating Australia. • He was born on 3rd August 1856. • He studied law at University and became a teacher/tutor before becoming was a barrister and a journalist. • He had 3 terms of prime minister.
