  2. Confucianism's Gods There are no gods in Confucianism, its more of a belief system towards social order and ethical values.

  3. Basic Beliefs of the Religion’s Followers • Beliefs: Confucianism is highly optimistic view of human nature • Human beings becoming awe-inspiring sages and worthies • Human beings are teachable, improvable, and perfectible people • Heaven is a personal and positive force

How Followers Practice the Religion • Confucianists follow 5 main relationships • Parent and child • Older brother and younger brother • Husband and wife • Friend and friend • Ruler and subject • Principles of Ren and Li • Ren is not directly translated but is said to mean like giving acts of kindness and also is really important in politics • Li means knowing the right thing to say and do • Education • Knowing Your Place

  5. Major Rituals/Holidays of the Religion Confucius birthday is the only major holiday of the religion and his birthday is September 28th.

  6. Role of Women in the Religion • Men were dominant in family • Influence of Confucianism led to reduction of women’s rights and status • Yin in yin-yang stood for feminine, dark, and passive • Women would do anything for husbands and family

How it Started Confucianism began in China and spread through South East and East Asia, gaining popularity in Japan, Korea and Vietnam as well.  For a long period of time, Confucianism had empirical acceptance and validity, as the Chinese emperors and their dynasties saw it as the official philosophy of the empire. Confucius lived between 551 and 479 BCE.  His teachings were carried on and promoted by his disciple Mencius, and, later, by Hsun-Tzu, who lived from about 300 to 235 BCE.  A rationalist form of Neo-Confucianism, an outgrowth of Confucianism, began to gain popularity through the teachings of Chu Hsi, who lived from 1033 to 1107 CE (Common Era, formerly AD, Anno Domini, Year of our Lord).  A more socially oriented Neo-Confucianism became popular through the teachings of Wang Yang-Ming, who lived from 1472 to 1529 CE.
