  1. OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System

  2. Integrated Safety Management BNL’s approach to integrating Environment, Safety, Security and Health requirements into the processes for planning and conducting work.

  3. Environmental Management ISO14001: • International standard to which BNL’s Environmental Management System (EMS) is registered. • Registration via periodic assessment by independent accredited registrar. • EMS is embedded in ISMS.

  4. Occupational Health and Safety Management System OHSAS 18001: Occupational Safety and Health Assessment Series

  5. What is OHSAS 18001? • 18001 is an international management system specification for Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) • Intended to help organizations identify and control OS&H risks • Developed to satisfy need for a recognized standard against which to be assessed and certified • Very much like 14001 Environmental Management System structure • The system that the Laboratory has chosen to improve and sustain safety

  6. OHSAS 18001 Requirements • Involves groups of people who do the work to identify and manage the risks involved in their work. • Eliminate or minimize OH&S risks to employees, contractors, visitors etc. Might not eliminate but must use all available means to control the risk. • Implement, maintain and continually improve OH&S performance. • Demonstrate conformance with stated policy. • Obtain independent third party evaluation & certification (some Depts/Div already registered)

  7. Key: Worker Involvement Evaluate risks of jobs: • Get a group of workers together who perform the work to be assessed (ie. autoclave use, chemicals use) • Divide the job into a reasonable number of tasks • Discuss each task and identify the hazards presented • Discuss controls and decide if they are adequate or additional are needed to mitigate or eliminate hazard. • Share good practices

  8. What You Need to Know.. • BNL has an Environment Safety Security and Health Policy (ESSH) Provide a safe and healthy workplace 1. We are all responsible for safety 2. Consider the safety of others 3. Integrate ESSH into our research and operations 4. Comply with BNL ESSH requirements 5. Reduce risks, conserve resources, prevent pollution 6. Assist stakeholders with their ESSH needs 7. Participate in community and government initiatives

  9. What You Need to Do.. • Continue work planning (experimental safety reviews, procedures, etc) • Share knowledge and insights on work that you do in order to better manage risks.
