  1. Floor Hockey Unit #5

  2. Background Information Floor hockey is a fun, recreational non-contact team activity emphasizing stick handling, passing and shooting of the puck (or ball) at a goal in an effort to outscore the opposing team. This fast paced cardiovascular activity incorporates many of the basic rules and terminology of ice hockey, but can be easily adapted to accommodate various facility limitations and the skill levels of participants.

  3. Terminology • Terminology • Goal Box: area marked in front of each goal, in which only the goalie may play *also referred to as the “goal box” • Center Line: mid court line of the basketball court • Face Off: means of starting play, used 1) at beginning of game 2) after puck goes out of bounds off two opponents simultaneously 3) for other situations determined by teacher • *ways to face off: • 1. Drop puck by ref between 2 designated opponents 2. Place puck between 2 designated opponents, then blow whistle to begin 3. Ground sticking • Ground Sticking: means of facing off where puck is placed between 2 opponents who simultaneously hit their stick to the ground then to each other sticks 3 times before playing puck *referred to as “bully” • Free Hit: when a team hits the puck out of bounds, then the other team is awarded a free hit at a spot closest where the puck left the playing area- defense must stay at least 6 feet away • High Sticking: violation where player has stick above the waist (backswing, follow through, or in attempt stop puck). In play; the stick should not be raised above the knees for safety.

  4. Playing Positions Center: Only player who is permitted to move the full length of the floor; leader of offensive play -needs speed, alertness, an adeptness in passing, dribbling and stick handling Forwards: Players on offense, use teamwork and quick passing to evade defensive guards and catch the goalie out of position. Forwards work with the center to score goals. Guards: Play defense, work with goalie to protect goal, work together to get puck away from goal and to forwards on other end of floor. Goalie: may use their stick, hands, feet, or body or stop puck while inside the goal box. Puck must be cleared to sides, not thrown or kicked down floor. Goalie may come out of goal box to play puck, puck must then be played with stick only.

  5. Stick Handling • Keep hands 6-12 inches on the stick; with dominant hand in lower position. • A flicking wrist action is best for speed and accuracy. • Shots may be made either forehand or backhand; use whatever type of shot the situation calls for. • Emphasize control and direction of puck, not distance. • Stick should be kept low at all times; ready to intercept opponents shots, to pass to teammates, and to also be ready to take a shot. • Don’t take wide swings; strive for speed, control, and accuracy. • The stick should never leave your hands • You must keep 2 hands on the stick at all times. • The blade of the stick is not to rise higher than the knee when shooting • Slap shots are not allowed • Never raise the stick above you head either to play the puck or to celebrate • Slide the puck on the floor, do not chop at it

  6. Scoring/Additional Rules Whenever puck passes the goal line that is a goal You cannot score on a foul May deflect off a player, but not be kicked in Changes in positions may only be made when play is dead Substitutions may be made after a score or when directed by official All players (except goalie) must keep hand on sticks at all times

  7. Fouls 1. Guards and forwards over center line 2. Touching puck with hand 3. Swinging stick above the waist 4. Player other than goalie in goal box 5. Raising your stick in the air to chopping at puck 6. Roughing fouls 7. Hacking or striking with stick 8. Pushing 9. Blocking with body 10. Tripping or any other action considered dangerous to other players PLAYERS ARE TO PLAY THE PUCK, NOT THE OPPONENT! Misconduct fouls 1. Any time play is deliberately stopped, by holding, lying or placing foot on the puck 2. Too many players on the floor 3. Player charged with a roughing foul or misconduct, must sit out 2 minutes. Team must play shorthanded for this period. If a goal is scored by the opposition before 2 minute penalty time has elapsed, player or players may then return to the floor.

  8. Safety!!! No pushing, shoving, or rough play is allowed. Do not reach down for the puck if you are off on the sidelines for during regular play. No high-sticking tripping, or slashing The instructor’s whistle stops play immediately If the puck goes outside the playing area, play will stop immediately! The offensive team must stay a stick length away from the goal keeper.

  9. How is play with a ball and a puck different? The game can be modified to play with a rubber ball, which speeds up the game and challenges stick- handling skills.
