  2. Summary: • Book 8 starts with Turnus gathering his forces while Aeneas troops have landed in Latium. Night has fallen and Aeneas and his men are sleeping along side of a river bank. As Aeneas was about to fall asleep Tiber, the river god, appeared to Aeneas with a message. Tiber says to Aeneas that he will find a white sow with 30 piglings. The spot where she is laying is where Aeneas city is to be built. He is to call it “Alba”. Then he is to find the Arcadians and become allies with them. • So, with the help of Tiber, they rowed down the river to find King Evander and his troops in hope of becoming allies. On the way they see off in the distance the white sow on the grassy bank where she lay. They agree to capture and sacrifice her to Juno. They arrive at the Arcadian city and approach them with olive branches. Pallas, accepts them into the city and welcomes them to join in their ceremonial sacrifices to Hercules. Pallas suggests that they meet with his father, King Evander.

  3. Summary cont.: • Aeneas speaks with Evander. Evander asks them to celebrate their annual rites to Hercules, and Aeneas and his troops do so. They drink wine and Evander tells the story of Cacus. Cacus was the half-man, half-beast that lived in the cave in the mountain. This terrible monster stole the sheep and cattle from the valley and hid them in his cave. The city prayed for help and their answers soon came. Hercules the avenger came to them and attempted to kill the beast. Through the many fights Hercules finally conquered the monster and the city honored him forever. Potitus was the founder of these annual ceremony rites and founded the Altar of Hercules. • Meanwhile, Venus is concerned about Aeneas and ask that Vulcan makes him powerful armor for fighting. Vulcan agrees and is off to working. Night has fallen and Evander is awake early in the morning. He meets with Aeneas and tell him he has an army for him. He says that they were held by a prophecy in the Etruscan hills. Evander also offers his son, Pallas, to go an d fight with the men. Aeneas agrees and a loud crash of thunder and lightning light the sky. Aeneas’ mother is calling to him because of danger. Venus comes down and presents the gift of armor to Aeneas. The Book ends with Aeneas getting ready for battle.

God Interventions: ~Tiber comes to Aeneas by the river bank. • White sow • City • Allies • Outcome: Aeneas and his men find the sow, sacrifice it and become allies with King Evander and his city. ~ Venus comes to Aeneas with the gift of armor and warning of danger. • Outcome: Aeneas receives the gifts and gets ready for war.

Characters: • New Characters Introduced: • Tiber: god of the river, helpful to Aeneas by providing a message • Pallas: son of King Evander, approaches Aeneas and his men when they first arrive at the city. • King Evander: King of the city, has trust in Aeneas welcomes them to their ceremonial rites, provides Aeneas and his men with another troop in the Etruscan hills. • Cacus: half-man, half-beast monster that lives in the cave along the hillside of the city, is defeated by Hercules • Potitus: founder of the annual ceremonial rites to Hercules, set up the Altar of Hercules
