  3. The role of AITSL All Education Ministers committed to the role of AITSL which is set out in a Letter of Expectation from the Australian Government Minister for Education on behalf of MCEECDYA. AITSL will contribute to the implementation of agreed national policies: • Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young People • National Partnership on Improving Teacher Quality. • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan

  4. AITSL’s purpose The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) was established in January 2010 to: • provide national leadership for the Commonwealth, state and territory governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership.

High quality teaching andschool leadership The Institute is tasked with: • creating new levels of teacher professionalism • empowering school leaders with strategies that support excellence in teaching in their schools • creating a new generation of leaders that can manage and develop 21st century schools. To achieve this AITSL has a very ambitious work plan in its first year of operation.

  7. Standards AITSL will develop and maintain rigorous national professional standards for teachers and school leaders. • National professional standards for teachers • Pre-service teacher education program standards • Standards for school leadership • Professional Learning standards

  8. National Professional Standards for Teachers The Standards will be used to inform: • national consistency around mandatory teacher registration requirements • an agreed process for national accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs

National Professional Standards for Teachers • Assure consistency and quality at each of four levels – Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead • Articulate what teachers are expected to know and be able to do at those four levels across three professional domains – Knowledge, Practice and Engagement

National Pre- service Teacher Education Program Accreditation AITSL will develop and oversee a national approach to the accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs that includes: • graduate level of the National Professional Standards for Teachers • agreed program standards • agreed national accreditation processes Final recommendations to MCEECDYA – December 2010

National accreditation of initial teacher education programs – Graduate standard • Quality assures entry to the profession • Focus on entry requirements, course discipline requirements and length of programs – ensuring those who successfully complete accredited programs can meet the graduate level standard

Nationally consistent registration of teachers • Control entry to and membership of the profession more stringently and consistently by considering elements such as: - qualifications - suitability and fitness - English language proficiency - proficiency of professional practice - renewal and maintenance of registration - requirements for registration for teachers entering from elsewhere • Address current variations in requirements and their application

  13. Professional development, research and innovation • Professional learning program standards • Flagship, national and affiliated programs • Clearinghouse and other research

  14. Stakeholder Engagement AITSL will work collaboratively with: • government and non-government school sectors • professional education associations • education unions • teacher educators • peak principal bodies • business and school communities. We look forward to working with you.
