  1. Jehovah-Nissi The LORD is my Banner Exodus 17:8-16

  2. Banner or Standard The Banner or the Standard of an Army is not an unusual concept in the times of Moses. Most standing Army’s or the day had a war banner or standard that was their rallying point for battle and the banner was representative of what they fought for. Jehovah-Nissi is literally translated as “The LORD is my banner” Israelites where to recognize that God is who they fought for and through and that He what their rallying point was to be.

  3. War Flag: Heraldic

  4. War Flag: Cross of Constantine

  5. War Flags: American Calvary

  6. Banner of God • Psalms 60:4- But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. • Psalms 20:5-May we shout for joy over your victory    and lift up our banners in the name of our God. •    May the LORD grant all your requests. • The 12 Tribes of Israel even had their own flags during their Exodus wandering. Numbers 1:52, 2:2

  7. Exodus 17:8-16 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”  10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

  8. 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the LORD, the LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

  9. Context of Exodus 17:8-16 • The Israelites had just been released from Egypt, just walked through the parted Red Sea, and had just received Manna and Quail from God • The immediate text preceding this account it Moses bringing water from a rock. • Their was many different miracles for the Israelites to see, but it was capped off with God’s reminder that He is their ultimate protector, and deserves their honor.

  10. I. God is our Banner, our protection • God is referred to in scripture as: Our Shield, Fortress, Hiding Place, Keeper, Refuge, Rock, Shade, Shelter, and Stronghold • What about the martyrdom of Peter, John the Baptist, and present day persecution? • Matthew 10:28-Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

  11. II. God is our Banner, Salvation • Many will fly banners over their head in hopes they will be saved. America, wealth, happiness are just a few of the banners we may place over ourselves, but in them there is no salvation • Matthew 1:21 tells us that even Jesus’ name means salvation. • Our salvation is solely placed in the banner of God’s name and protection.

  12. Moses and Jesus • Moses interceded for the Israelites • Moses stretched his hands out for a momentary victory • Moses set up a monument to remember God’s salvation • Christ intercedes for all man • Christ stretched His hands out for eternal victory • Christ set up the church to honor and remember God’s salvation

  13. Conclusion • God’s very name is a reflection of His salvation and protection for His children. He is our rallying point in battle, our protector and defender, and most importantly, He is out salvation through Christ.
