  1. A paper review: Le Kuai Group meeting @ JPL 2012/02/06

  2. Strategy for evaluation of the TCCON-inverted fluxes TCCON XCO2 Inversion method Transport model A global atmospheric simulations of CO2 mixing ratios Inverted fluxes Surface air-sample measurement Seasonal cycle & Annual sub-continental budgets HIPPO & CONTRAIL

  3. Quality of the inverted fluxes • Global annual mean CO2growth rate • Seasonal cycle • Sub-continental annual budgets

  4. Seasonal cycle:TCCON inversion vs. air-sample inversion • 14 TCCON sites • January 2009-Dec 2011 • 91 air-sample stations • January 2009-Dec 2011 2009 mean seasonal cycle of natural CO2 flux over the lands North of 20°N • Reduced peak-to-peak amplitude by one fourth. • Lengthen the uptake season by a few weeks. • Converge towards a similar SC. • Uncertainty by TCCON is twice of by air samples

  5. Regional annual net CO2budget (TCCON) (inc. fossil) Figure 2.

  6. The box-and whiskerplot FT: 850-300 hPa BL: 990~850 hPa

  7. Conclusions • TCCON inverted mean seasonal cycle is similar to the one obtained from the surface air-sample inversion. • Improves the NH seasonal cycle by a priori. • Regional budgets are reliable. (statistically consistent but larger uncertainty) • Challenging: different footprint. • Impact of transport model uncertainty in these results to be quantified. • Highlight the potential of space-borne monitoring of XCO2 from space-borne instruments

  8. GOSAT inversion vs. air-sample inversion • Observations: • ACOSv2.9 (with or without Wunch et al. (2011) b/c) • June 2009-March 2011 • 14 TCCON sites • January 2009-Dec 2011 • 91 air-sample stations • January 2009-Dec 2011 TCCON inversion vs. air-sample inversion

  9. Peak-to-peak: 4 GtC/month Peak-to-peak: 3 PgC/month By FrédéricChevallier Seasonal cycle over global land By Feng Deng, Dylan Jones

  10. Regional annual net CO2 budget (GOSAT)
