  1. SCIENTIFIC NOTATION Making Big Numbers Easier to Understand

  2. Introduction Big numbers can be difficult to understand. Numbers with a lot of zeros (0’s) are hard to compare and contrast. Which is Larger? A) 987000000000 B) 8730000000000 Answer: B 8 730 000 000 000 987 000 000 000

  3. THERE IS AN EASIER WAY! • Scientific Notation makes Big numbers easier to work with. • Scientific notation consists of a coefficient (Between 1 & 10) multiplied by a power of 10 • Ex. 821 000 = 8.21 x 100 000 = 8.21 x 105

  4. Method #2 The decimal point moves 5 places, so… Count the Decimal places 821 000.  8(5)2(4)1(3)0(2)0(1)0. = 8.21 x 105

  5. Examples Convert 4.59 x 107 to standard form. = 4.59 x 10 000 000 = 45 900 000 Convert 991 000 to scientific notation. = 991 x 1000 = 9.91 x 100 x 1000 = 9.91 x 105
