The Engineering Survey • Survey is required by OSHA 1926.850(a) • Survey determines the condition of framing, floors, and walls to prevent premature collapse of any portion of the structure. • Helps the contractor plan the job • Methods of Wrecking (equipment needed) • Man Power • Protection of the Public

  6. Utilities Location • Alabama One Call 1-800-292-8525 or 811 • Must call at least 48 hours in advance • Service is available Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm • All utilities are marked in a standardized color code

  7. Medical Services and First Aid • Provisions should be made for prompt medical attention • Make sure first aid kits are properly stocked and accessible • Emergency phone numbers should be readily accessible

  8. Shoring and Bracing • Brace or shore walls and floor structures that have been damaged and may require employee entry. • No work is permitted where structural collapse hazards exist until they are corrected by shoring, bracing, or other effective means. • Demolition of exterior walls and floors must begin at the top of the structure and proceed downward. • Structural or load-supporting members on any floor must not be cut or removed until all stories above that floor have been removed.

  9. Fire Prevention and Protection • A fire plan should be established prior to demolition. • Fully charged portable fire extinguishers should be provided throughout the operation. • Electrical wiring and equipment for providing light, heat, or power should be installed by a competent person and inspected regularly. • Local fire departments are often willing to assist in pre-demolition structure assessments.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher P-A-S-S Pull -- Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being activated Aim -- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire Squeeze -- Maintain a distance of eight to ten feet away from the fire and squeeze the handle. Discharge will only occur if the handle is being squeezed. Sweep -- Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire until it appears to be out.

Demolition Checklist • Make sure workers are using the right PPE for the job (noise & dust exposures) • Dispose of all materials properly • Insure that workers are not exposed to energized power sources • Educate workers on the special hazards they may encounter (lead paint) • Educate workers on the application and use of fall protection
