  1. Do NowMonday, August 26th, 2013 Welcome back! Follow the directions below. At Level 0, write down the following items: Favorite food Favorite genre and why 2 things you hope to learn from the World Literature course. Best thing you did this summer You should also use a sheet of paper to make a name tent for your desk.

  2. Objective: • SWBAT locate and discuss the important information of the World Literature Syllabus. • SWBAT locate and discuss the important information of classroom routines & procedures. • SWBAT identify the Big Goals and Expectations of World Literature.

  3. Summer Assignment • Take out summer novels • Take out typed essay

  4. Syllabus • Read through the syllabus. • As you read, highlight things that you think are important to remember. • Write down any questions you have about the syllabus on your syllabus. • When instructed to do so, talk with the person next to you about these questions using a level 1.

  5. Book Distribution • No Greek mythology book (you will receive a print out) • Kite Runner • Animal Farm • Private Peaceful • Dawn • Things Fall Apart

  6. Routines & Procedures • Read through the class routines & Procedures. • As you read, highlight things that you think are important to remember. • Write down any questions you have about the Routines & Procedures on your sheet. • When instructed to do so, talk with the person next to you about these questions using a level 1.

  10. Deserted Island -You have just landed on a deserted island. You must choose one thing that you get to keep. It does not need to be practical (like food or water)- it should be something that is important to you. Examples: your dog, photos, a journal, a special book, your guitar, your favorite stuffed animal. -Be prepared to explain WHY you are bringing this item.

  11. Do Now: Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 Follow the directions below. Take out Homework 1. Title a piece of paper with the MLA heading at the top. In complete sentences, answer the questions based on the information you find in the “Procedures Scavenger Hunt” document given to you. NOTE: Number your responses, and include headings on your paper (for example, when answering the “Noise Level” section, you will write Noise Level at the top of the section under which you answer those particular questions.

  14. Class Culture Role Play! In a group, read the scenario that has been given to you. Your group will perform the scene while the audience provides feedback on the appropriate ways to handle each situation.

  18. Back Example Definition: to treat someone like they aren’t human. Sentence: The slave owner dehumanized his slaves by beating them. Hint/Connection: “de”=removal/away

  20. Back ex. 2 (with root) Definition: to draw back Sentence: When I found out I was wrong, I was forced to retract my statement. Hint/Connection: “re” (back) + “tractum “ = to draw back tract = to drag

  21. Vocabulary- Wk. 1 1. mythology- n. A set of stories or beliefs belonging to a particular religion or culture. Myths often include a moral or lesson. 2. immortality- n. The ability to live forever. 3. fortify- v. to strengthen (mentally or physically) Root: vinc/vict: to conquer 4. invincible- adj. unable to be conquered (in= not, vince= conquer) 5. provincial- adj. limited in knowledge of the world; narrow-minded (you live in a conquered place, so you don't know much) 6. evince- v. to establish , to show or demonstrate clearly, to make clear

Vocabulary Example Sentences • There’s no sense in trying to beat superman; he’s invincible (unable to be conquered). • If you want to overcome your provincial (narrow-minded)tendencies, you should travel the world! • She was too provincial (simple)to try Indian or Thai cuisine. • Shirley has evinced(made clear) from the time she was little that she wants to move away when she gets older. • Tony wants to be a vampire because he wants immortality(the ability to live forever). • I used glue on the broken picture frame to fortify (strengthen) it. • He read the story of Prometheus and Pandora and then realized that he didn’t believe in mythology (stories of a culture).

  23. Vocabulary Cards • Take a moment to think of a hint/ connection for each word and include it on your notecards.

SSR at MCP • Students will read a total of 10 books • Students will submit a tentative booklist the second week of school. • Students will read 3 non fiction text by the end of the year • Students will received 15 minutes in class, twice a week, to read SSR text. • After SSR, students will be expected to write journal entry of their SSR • Consequences: If students do not have the text they are supposed to have, they will receive a LaSalle. Failure to have your Journal will also result in a LaSalle.

  27. MID 501 Notes Main Idea vs. Topic • Topic: A general word that describes what the paragraph or passage is about. • Main Idea: An idea or point being made about the topic.

  28. How to determine the main idea in a paragraph: Step 1: Identify the topic 1. Look at the title 2. Identify the reappearing nouns

  29. How to determine the main idea in a paragraph: Step 2: Write a MID statement (at the paragraph level) • Identify the 5W’s • Ask yourself, “what point or idea is being made about the topic?”

How to determine the main idea in a paragraph: Example) • One of the most important messages I like to share at this time of year is to “Eat breakfast every day.” If your summer schedule was a bit lax, take the next few days to get back on track. As kids start back to school they need to start each day with some nutritious food in their stomachs. It’s really brain food. Countless studies have shown that kids perform better in school, and are less irritable, when their day starts with breakfast.

During the confusion and bewilderment of the second day Mary hid herself in the nursery and was forgotten by everyone. Nobody thought of her, nobody wanted her, and strange things happened of which she knew nothing. Mary alternately cried and slept through the hours. She only knew that people were ill and that she heard mysterious and frightening sounds. Once she crept into the dining-room and found it empty, though a partly finished meal was on the table and chairs and plates looked as if they had been hastily pushed back when the diners rose suddenly for some reason. The child ate some fruit and biscuits, and being thirsty she drank a glass of wine which stood nearly filled. It was sweet, and she did not know how strong it was.
