STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES • Improved sector education and awareness • Improved compliance with environmental legislation • Bio-diversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated • Prevention and control of invasive alien species • Improved socio-economic benefits within the environmental sector • Ecosystem services restored and maintained • Less waste that is better managed • Work experience and training for unemployed people.

Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programmes • Working on Waste: Building landfill sites and waste collection. • Youth Jobs in Waste: Promoting recycling and re-use of waste. • Youth Environmental Service: Environmental activities that benefit the poor. • Working for the Coast: Repair and cleaning of coast, and coastal infrastructure. • People and Parks: Repair and cleaning of parks, and park infrastructure. • Working for Wildlife: Wildlife-based land-use practices; environmental monitors. • Greening & Open-space Management: Urban parks and greening projects. • Sustainable Land-Use Management: Restoring productive potential of rural land.

Natural Resources Management Programmes • Working for Water: Management of Invasive Alien Species. • Working on Fire: Wild-fire management and utilization. • Working for Wetlands: Management of wetlands. • Working for Land: Repair and productive use of land. • Working for Energy: Invasive and bush-encroachment biomass to energy. • Eco-Furniture Programme: Manufacture of products from invasive plant biomass. • Working for Forests: Management of indigenous forests and woodlots.

  7. Bio-security – Prevention and Control of Invasive Aliens Species • Prevention Services: Protection at airports, harbours, border posts & postal service. • Risk Assessment: Ascertaining the risk of actual and potentially invasive species. • Competent Authority: Compliance with laws (with enforcement by LACE Branch). • Issuing Authority: Issuing of permits and . • Early Detection: Detection of emerging invasive species, for rapid responses. • Advocacy Services: Promoting appropriate behaviour to prevent /manage invasives. • Regulatory Services: Support B&C and LACE Branches in enhancement of Lists and Regulations.

  8. Information Management and Sector Co-ordination • Ensure effective knowledge and information management support services for the branch activities as well as managing the coordination of the socio-economic activities • Create conditions for effective corporate and co-operative governance, international co-operation and implementation of Expanded Public Works Programme projects in the Environment Sectors.
