  2. Stepping Up to LAR • Support contextualized learning experiences, allowing users to find, use or deliver just the right digital content

  3. LAR Activity Results • Both resources and metadata need quality improvements • NSDL resources are showing their age • NSDL metadata is missing a lot of basic information to support LAR

  4. Approaches • Programmatic: systems & services already operating on resources/metadata to move the NSDL towards LAR • Manual: human-mediated processes already acting on the resources/metadata to move the NSDL towards LAR • Brainstorms: other ideas (programmatic or manual) to move the NSDL towards LAR

Programmatic Approaches • Metadata normalization: values standardized or may not be used (e.g. term zero for audience) • Search Filtering: records missing title, URL or description are removed (bad values remain) • Native Metadata: other formats accepted; need to convert to nsdl_dc to see at NSDL.org • Contextualization: usage data (comm_para) & annotations (comm_anno) accepted

  6. Manual Approaches • NSDL Accessioning Board (NAB): approves new & deaccessioned resource collections • 2009 Collections Refocus: keep library content that supports educational learning by removing 2.1 million items • Initial LAR Catergorization: judge LAR of a collection: most ready, could be ready, no hope or not applicable

  7. Brainstorms • Metadata Quality Guidelines (like Resource and a goal of this workshop): concise explanation of metadata values & quality for desired fields • LAR specific metadata framework : a programmatic means to require metadata like education level or resource type to be present in order to create a valid XML record • Weeding for LAR: Like 2009 but apply LAR concepts; encourage smaller & more targeted collections (afternoon discussion)
