  1. Neil Armstrong By; Chance Carey

  2. Born on August 5, 1930 on his grandparents’ farm in Auglaize County, Ohio, Neil Armstrong was the eldest of three children. In 1969, Neil Armstrong was commander of Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the Lunar surface and shortly thereafter, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. I picked him because I am very interested in space.

  5. THIS JUST IN On July 20, 1969, a man from Wapakoneta, Ohio, made history by becoming the first person to set foot on the moon. Astronaut Nell Armstrong is revealed in this detailed, authorized biography as a man of opposites. On the one hand, he is unassuming and down-to-earth, the product of an average suburban, middle-class household. On the other hand, his lifelong dreams of flight would manifest themselves in an unimaginable achievement and make him a legendary figure. Hanson, a former NASA historian, unfolds the public and private lives of this remarkable astronaut and engineer, compiling interviews with more than 125 subjects, including family, close friends, and Armstrong himself. Among the topics covered are his early experiences with flight, combat missions in Korea, detailed accounts of the Apollo 11 mission, and Armstrong's dedication to engineering and teaching astronomy. Hansen paints a touching picture of the man whose small step was a giant leap for humankind. Simon & Schuster, 2005, 784 p., b&w plates, hardcover, $30.00.

  6. TIMELINE OF NEIL ARMSTRONGS LIFE • On 5th of August 1930, Neil Armstrong was born to father Stephen and mother Viola. When he first started walking, no one must have dreamt, he would walk on the moon someday! • At a young age of six, which was in the year 1936, he took his first plane ride in a Tin Goose. • He was a Blume High School student. He completed his schooling in 1947 and commenced studying aerospace engineering in Purdue University. • In 1955, Neil Armstrong earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. • Armstrong chose to work at Lewis Field and began in February 1955. • He married Janet Elizabeth Shearon, whom he had met in Purdue. They wedded on January 28, 1956. • During his tenure at Lewis field, Armstrong was given the responsibility of the payload release of a B-29 Superfortress on March 22, 1956. • Armstrong took his first flight in a rocket plane on August 15, 1957, in the Bell X-1B, to a height of 18.3 kilometers. • In the November of 1960, Armstrong was selected as one of the pilot consultants for a military space plane called X-20 Dyna-Soar. • In one of his speeches in 1961, President Kennedy announced that they would land a man from USA on moon. I wonder if anyone had thought that the man from USA would be Neil Armstrong! • On January 28, 1962, Neil Armstrong lost his daughter Karen. Time moved on. • In 1962, he resolved to become an astronaut and became America's first nonmilitary astronaut in September 1962. • On March 15, 1962 he was in the list of the six pilot-engineers who would fly the space plane once the plane was ready. • In 1962, on the 20th of April, he met with an accident, during his X-15 flight. He hardly managed to land safely. • On May 21, 1962, Armstrong was a part of the "Nellis Affair". He was sent in a F-104 to examine Delamar Lake, for emergency landings. • It was declared that Armstrong would be the Command Pilot for Gemini 8 and that he would be accompanied by Pilot David Scott. • In 1966, he was aboard Gemini 8, which marked his first space flight! • In 1969, he became a part of NASA. In the month of January of the same year, he was chosen to be a member of the Apollo 11 mission. They were going to make history on successfully landing on moon. • On the 16th of July, Armstrong, joined by astronauts Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins left the Kennedy Space Center and started their journey to the moon! • 20th July 1969 was "The Day", the day when a man on earth for the first time stepped on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first earthly being to step on the moon. • On 24th of July, they returned to their mother Earth. • Armstrong won the Presidential Medal for Freedom and the Robert J. Collier Trophy in the same year. • In 1970, he was honored with the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy. • In May 1970, Armstrong went to the Soviet Union to speak on Space Research, at the 13th annual conference of the International Committee. • He resigned from NASA in 1971 and started working at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. • Seven years later that is in 1978, he was given the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. • In 1980 Armstrong became the chairman of Cardwell International, a supplier of oil-drilling equipment. • In 1986 he became the vice-chairman of Challenger inquiry to find the cause of explosion of the Challenger space shuttle. • He later worked with the EDO Corporation. • Armstrong married Carol Knight on June 12, 1994. This was his second marriage. • He was troubled when Hallmark Cards used one of his quotes in a Christmas ornament without his permission. He sued them for that in 1994. • He retired from the post of Chairman of Board, from the EDO Corporation in 2002. • In October 2004, Purdue University announced that they were going to name their new engineering building as Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. • In May 2005 Armstrong had a strange battle with his barber who had sold his hair after cutting them and made money in the name of Armstrong. • Armstrong’s authorized biography titled ‘First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong’ was brought out in the year 2005. • Armstrong is often asked by the press, about the future of space flights. In his opinion, the mission of a man on mars is going to be less challenging than the lunar landing. Today, at the age of 78, he looks at aeronautics with concern and foresight.
