  2. School District U-46 Summer Learning • Summer SAFE • Extended School Year (ESY) - Special Education • Elementary School Intervention • Middle School Intervention • Eighth Grade Bridges • Middle School Credit Recovery Classes • High School Credit Recovery and Credit Advancement

  3. Academic and social activities were provided for students participating in the program 230 students participated in the SAFE program at Fox Meadow, Sycamore Trails and Bartlett elementary schools SAFESupervised Activities For Children of Employed Parents

  4. Extended School Year (ESY)Special Education • Academic instruction and related services (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech and Language) were provided based on Individual Educational Plans (IEP) • 200 students participated in the program at Liberty Elementary School

  5. Elementary School Intervention Program • Local assessments (DLB and MAP) were used to identify students needing support in reading • 1,500 students in grades K-5 participated at Fox Meadow, Highland, Lords Park, Huff, Sycamore Trails and Oakhill elementary schools • Literacy intervention curriculum featured the following components: • Phonemic Awareness/Phonics/Word Work • Shared Reading/Read Aloud • Guided Reading – small group • Writers Workshop • Independent Reading

  6. Middle School Intervention Program • Local assessment (MAP) was used to identify students needing support in both literacy and math • 418 students who will be in seventh and eighth grade in the 2009-10 school year participated in the program at Tefft and Kenyon Woods middle schools • Literacy component – Non-fiction with a focus on “frontloading” social studies vocabulary for the upcoming grade • Math component – Math Elevationsis used to provide hands-on instruction to support identified areas of need in mathematics

  7. Eighth Grade Bridges • Local assessment (MAP) was used to identify eighth grade students needing support in both literacy and math • 199 students participated in the program at South Elgin High School • Program was based on: • Our Adolescent/Secondary Literacy Framework:Engagement + Access = Practice + Comprehension Strategy Instruction = Student Reading Achievement • Hands-on math instruction focusing on preparation for algebra skills • Transitional activities were scheduled throughout the summer

  8. Middle School Credit Recovery • Classes in the core curricular area were provided for students who did not successfully pass the class during the school year • 288 middle school students participated in credit recovery classes at Kenyon Woods Middle School

  9. High School Credit Recovery and Course Acceleration • Required classes for graduation (credit recovery and acceleration) were provided for student enrollment • The total number of students in the summer classes at South Elgin High School was 1264
