  2. Objectives • Define what we mean by e-learning and classroom learning • Describe the managed learning environment • Demonstrate key projects to meet Trust objectives • Take a candid look at challenges to implementation

What is e-learning ? ‘the facilitation of learning through the use of electronic technology’ (Cumbria and Lancashire Strategic Health Authority, 2003) Can be - • Electronic learning • Web based learning • Computer based learning • Online learning • Distance learning • Technology based learning

  4. Tried and tested - • Pitman's Shorthand Correspondence – 1889. • Printed course posted to learners with assignments back to the Tutor in London.

  5. Quality of learning - Studies have shown: Learning can be 25 to 40% higher • Learning time reduced by an average of 40 to 60%

  6. Blended Learning “…represents an opportunity to integrate the innovative and technological advances offered by online with the interaction and participation offered in the best of traditional learning” Thorn, K 2003. Blended Learning

  15. Aim •  To relentlessly improve patient experience and safety relating to infection control by the provision and embedding of blended learning

Objectives include… • All infection control link practitioners to have completed the CLU Infection Control E Learning package by end of March 2008 • Identifying appropriate learning programmes to complement and extend the CLU and BMJ Learning clostridium difficile packages • Initiate improvement cycles and action learning sets by facilitating group discussion in identifying practice development to reduce health care associated infections

  18. Developing e-learning for ICE - Order Communications • Testing the e authoring tools Implementing NCRS • 10 000 people will need training…. • Integrating booking, training and assessment process

  22. Final thoughts… Identify high impact driversLaunch subjects that appeal to influential sponsors Think of e learning as more than just content: support learners where possible as you would in the classroom
