February 21, 2013 • Please turn in your homework clock assignment and your grade sheet. • Objective: Students will investigate the Mission of Discovery in order to argue how respectful Lewis and Clark were towards the Native Americans. • Drill: Why is the source of a document extremely important? • Homework: Worksheet, and study for quiz next class. • Table of Contents: Update using the board

Historical Documents • For each historical document follow the steps below • Before Reading-Source your document • During Reading- Underline evidence that helps you answer the focus question • After Reading-Answer the guiding questions for the document • Focus Question: Were Lewis and Clark respectful towards the Native Americans they met on the journey?

  3. Structured Academic Controversy Step 1 • Team A—argues YES Lewis & Clark were respectful • Team B—argues NO Lewis & Clark were not respectful • You have 10 minutes to work with you partner to find 3 pieces of evidence which support your side • Complete the work on the back of your paper.

  4. Structured Academic Controversy Step 2 • Both members of Team A present arguments to Team B • Team B writes down these arguments on the back of the paper and reads them back to Team A • You have 7 minutes

  5. Structured Academic Controversy Step 3 • Both members of Team B present arguments to Team A • Team A writes down these arguments on the back of the paper and reads them back to Team B • You have 7 minutes

  6. Structured Academic Controversy Step 4 • All 4 members can abandon their assigned positions. • The group needs to attempt to develop a consensus amongst the members. • Write down your groups decision on the back of your paper in the box under “Coming to Consensus”
