Guidance for Schools on Developing Emotional Health and Wellbeing – Peter Sharp Advice to staff in schools and those working with schools on how to promote Emotional Health and Well-being so as to achieve HS Status.   6. SEAL SEAL & EHWB are closely linked SEAL is part of a wider delivery mechanism for EHWB and should be used within the whole school approach of the Healthy Schools Programme

SEAL links to Healthy School StatusWhole School Approach • SEAL uses the whole school approach. • If you are involved in the HS programme you will be familiar with the 10 areas of the whole school approach: • School Culture and Environment • Staff professional development needs, health and welfare • Leadership management and managing change • Teaching and learning • Provision of pupil support services • Policy Development • Assessing, recording, and reporting pupils’ achievement • Partnerships with parent/carers and local communities • Giving pupils a voice • Curriculum planning & work with outside agencies

Healthy Schools Criteria:- 4.8 Participation of children and young people Provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in school activities and responsibilities to build their confidence and self esteem. Minimum Evidence ………. Pointers to Good Practice…………….. Schools need to consider (8 points) eg:- Do our policies, systems and procedures within the school promote the self-esteem of all children and young people in the school? Do we involve our children and young people in deciding on and providing support at all points of transition? Example of EHWB Criteria pg 44:-

  9. How SEAL can help? “Developing self-esteem and self-confidence are essential elements of SEAL through encouraging participation and taking responsibility. All the social and emotional skills of SEAL underpin effective participation but particularly those within self-awareness and social skills” “ Children and young people are encouraged to participate fully in shaping their own learning and the learning environment” EHWB Guidance pg 45

Health Improvement Specialists – Emotional Health and Wellbeing – South West Essex PCT Co-ordinate and implement a range of emotional health and well-being programmes in partnership with LA & other agencies within Local Authority and inform the commissioning process particularly focussing on Tier 1 – prevention agenda.
