  2. Mississippi River • Access to the Mississippi River was important for transportation and trade. • 1795 Pinckney Treaty: guaranteed Americans the right to use the Mississippi River.

  3. Mississippi River • In 1801 Jefferson discovered that Spain gave the entire Louisiana Territory to France. • Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to Paris to try to buy the city of New Orleans.

  4. Troubles in Haiti Surprise, surprise…. • Toussaint L’Overture led a revolution in Haiti driving the French out. Why is this important… you ask… • Without Haiti as a base the French would have trouble defending Louisiana.

  5. Louisiana Purchase • Napoleon needed money to support his war in Europe so he offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory. • Monroe and Livingston bought the territory for 15 million dollars (4 cents an acre). WOW!

  6. Louisiana Territory Why do you think the United State’s new purchase was so important? • Double the size of the United States • Ensured control over the Mississippi • Opened up the American West
