  2. What was going on in Europe? • English Civil War between King Charles I and the English Parliament • Parliament won- Charles sentenced to death • Oliver Cromwell became the Lord Protector • Restoration- after Cromwell’s death the monarchy was restored when Charles II became King

  3. Holy Experiment • King Charles II granted land to William Penn • Pennsylvania • Complete political and religious freedom • Fair treatment of Native Americans • Quakers- pacifists • “frame of government”- Constitution • Religious tolerance • Large number of German and Scots-Irish immigrants

  4. The Carolinas • North • Lacked good harbors • Small, scattered population • South • 1st settlement was Charles Town (Charleston) • Exported captured natives to the Caribbean
