  2. In order to understand how technology is impacting the workplace, it is first important to understand how it works and what it can do. • The biggest change to technology in the workplace in recent history is the introduction and widespread use of computers. • Computers allow us to accomplish more, faster than we ever would have though possibly only a few years ago.

  3. Questionnaire Check out the questionnaire at http://compreviews.about.com/od/buyers/l/blcompqstart.htm- this sites takes you through a series of question that help you determine the right computer for you.

  4. Terms to remember • GHz is an abbreviation for gigahertz which a unit of measure of the clock speed of a processor. • MB is an abbreviation for megabyte which is a measure of file size or memory size. A megabyte equals 1024,576 bytes. • GB is an abbreviation for gigabyte which equals 1024 megabytes or approximately one billion bytes. • Optical Drive are the CD (Compact disc) and DVD (digital versatile disc) drives. Optical drives indicate the recording speed with a number and an x. For example 24x. You should get a CD-RW/DVD with a recordable speed of 24x. (The tag RW indicates the CD can write data on a blank or rewritable disc.) Many current systems have a DVD burner. This means you can write to the DVD. • External ports are used to connect other devices. The USB (universal serial bus) is the most important serial port. It is used to connect printers, digital cameras, keyboard and mouse. Another common port found on both desktop and notebook computers is a FireWire (IEEE1394) port for transferring larger video or image files. • Network Interface controller (NIC) allows a computer to connect through a router to a local area network (LAN) or high-speed Internet. NICs can be Ethernet or wireless. A wireless router enables you to connect a wireless laptop or desktop.

  5. Shopping for a New Computer Please complete the following in a Microsoft Word document and save it for submission. You want to buy a new computer, and have somehow managed to convince your parents it is a good idea. They tell you to buy the best computer you can buy for your need, up to $1000. First: Describe your computer requirements (use the questionnaire you answered at the beginning of this note for inspiration) What do you need your computer to do? Do you want it to be portable? Will you play games on in? Edit Videos? Record Music? These requirements should be specific to you. Tell me about them in ½ a page. Once you have established your personal requirements – It’s time to go shopping for a computer! Use the internet to research current computers available for less than $1000 and pick the best one for you. Include a description – Brand, basic specs, price, etc. AND an explanation of WHY you think that is the best computer for you.
