  2. What will you do in this lesson?

What level can you reach? • At level 3, you will know that you need to use rules or formulae in the cat/dog model • At level 4, you will be able to identify the rules and formula in the cat/dog model and work out which ones need to be added or changed • At level 5, you will know how to make alter the model by changing variables and formulae

  4. What is a spreadsheet? You could use the mini-whiteboards to write down your ideas...

  6. Using Ruby’s spreadsheet You will be shown Ruby’s spreadsheet. Discuss the following questions: • Can you write down two more “What if...?” questions which Ruby could answer by using her spreadsheet?

  9. A partly made spreadsheet Click here to open the spreadsheet. It will look like this: As a class, you need to decide which of the yellow cells contain VARIABLES (numbers which can be changed) or FORMULAS (cells which work something out using numbers in other cells.) You should put a V into all cells which hold variables and an F into all cells which hold formulas. On the next screen, you will see the right answers!

  11. Making your own spreadsheet Click here to open a fresh copy of the partly made spreadsheet. You need to type in the costs of each item from your research at the beginning of this unit. You will also need to type in the formulas to work out the total costs in the spreadsheet. To help you, you will be given a printed copy of the sheet on which you can write the values and formulas you are going to use. All the cells in which you need to write something are shaded. Some of the formulas are already added to help you. When you have filled in the printed version, add the information to your copy of the pet spreadsheet.

  12. Fill in your assessment sheet! Open the assessment sheet you saved at the end of the last lesson and put a 1 next to the level you think you have achieved in lesson 2. Remember to give reasons for your decision!
