Safety Precautions with Machines • Wearing safety glasses • Ensuring the teeth of saw blades are pointing down • Making sure that boards are free of paint, nails and other foreign materials • Firmly gripping hand power tools • Asking for help with large pieces of materials • Clamping work down to a bench when sanding or drilling • Keeping work area free of clutter and clean • Tie back hair • Keep loose clothing (like long sleeves) rolled up

Jig Saw SAFE UNSAFE Checking blade tension before cutting Cutting plastic at 750 RPM Insert the sabre blade in the lower chuck only To adjust blade tension sleeve after inserting a jeweler’s blade Attempting to turn curves too short for the blade To use the saw blade having 32 teeth per inch for general purpose sawing To operate the saw with the guide post hold-down foot 1/8”-1/4” above the work To make adjustments when the saw is running To use any speed depending on time to complete operation To talk to others while sawing

Table Saw Safe Unsafe Checking the width of the cut at the front and back of the blade when ripping Not talking while sawing Not using the machine without instruction or permission Using a push stick to rip narrow stock Making sure the teeth of the saw blade are pointing toward the direction from which the wood will be fed. Working on a littered floor Removing scraps while the saw is running Removing guards Extending saw blades as far as possible through stock Sawing warped or twisted stock Free hand sawing Standing directly in line with the saw blade

Finishing Sander Safe Unsafe Securely tighten sand paper clamps Lift machine from work before turning off Tear or cut sandpaper sheets to size Hold the sander with one hand and the work with the other or clamp Clean the sander before storing Disconnect from power source before changing sandpaper Placing excessive pressure on the machine to make it cut faster Starting the sander while it is sitting on the piece of work Using torn or worn sandpaper Setting sander on the edge of the table or bench Sanding across the grain Cutting the 3rd prong from the ground plug
