  3. IMPROVING THE WAY YOU VIEW YOUR COMMUNITY may result in IMPROVING THE WAY YOUR COMMUNITY VIEWS YOUR SCHOOL

  4. The Composition of Community Education Fraternal (surrounding schools’ principals & educators, DoE officials, district offices) Churches(various denominations) Cooperate World (businesses)

  5. The Composition of Community Senior Citizen (grandmas & grandpas) Parents(especially first time parents) Young People (your child’s peers in neighbouring schools) General Public (silent observers)

  6. HAVE THEIR OWN POINT OF REFERENCE • ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT – OFTEN IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION • ALL HAVE CERTAIN PERCEIVED SOCIAL STATUS

  7. Expectations of Your Community • Education Fraternal • Speak a language that we understand • Need more interaction • Churches • We need to fight the same battle (against evil forces) • Be a school not a church • Corporate World • Reform communities • Be innovative

  8. Expectations of Your Community • Senior Citizens • Prejudices of a previous generation • Parents • Extremely critical • School will take care of my child’s holistic education • Misplaced expectancy of teach competency

  9. Expectations of Your Community • Young People • A school that rocks • Cool kids • Fun stuff • General Public • No school is a real school unless it “looks real”

  12. How? • SCHOOL POLICIES & PRACTICES • Align school policies with national & provincial legislation • SA Schools Act (Act 84 of 1996) • Latest Provincial Legislation (WCED – Government Gazette 6919 of 4 Nov. 2011 • School domestic practises • Public appearances

  13. How? • COMPETENT TEACHING AND EFFECTIVE LEARNING • Focussed on central tasks of TEACHING, LEARNING AND MANAGEMENT • Tasks carried of with COMPETENCE AND CONFIDENCE • Mindset that supports WORK ETHICS, EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS and ACKNOWLEDGE SUCCESS. • Strong internal ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEMS
